Orbán: Hungary will only sign bilateral pact with Germany pending Austria agreement

Hungary will only conclude a bilateral agreement with Germany concerning migration if such an agreement is reached between Germany and Austria, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said at his talks with the Austrian chancellor, Orbán’s press chief said on Wednesday.

Orbán spoke to Sebastian Kurz by phone on Tuesday evening, Bertalan Havasi told MTI.

The Hungarian prime minister will outline his position to German Chancellor Angela Merkel at their talks scheduled for Thursday in Berlin, he said.

Orbán told Kurz that Hungary’s position on migration has not changed since 2015.

Hungary, he said, is not the first point of entry to Europe for migrants arriving through Greece and Bulgaria, Havasi said, adding that migrants using the western Balkans route enter Europe in Greece for the most part.

The Hungarian prime minister will hold talks with German Interior Minister Horst Seehofer and Bundestag President Wolfgang Schauble later on Wednesday.
