PM Orbán’s potential successor has hinted at whether Hungary should leave the EU

János Lázár, one of PM Orbán’s strongmen, has framed his thoughts around how the new motorway connects, rather than divides, Central and Eastern European countries with the Balkans—contrasting sharply with the bloody wars and civil conflicts of the 20th century.

Europe’s old values and way of life

According to the Hungarian News Agency, Lázár, serving as Hungary’s minister of transport and construction, expressed concern that Europe is passively watching as the New World, the United States, rises again to greatness. He noted how China, India, and Brazil are becoming new global economic powers while Europe “tragically falls behind” due to ideological battles and conflicts within its own member states instead of strengthening its economy or overcoming external rivals.

To regain its former status, Europe must show greater respect and openness toward Central and Southeastern Europe, Lázár declared. He believes inspiration for renewal should come from nations like Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, and Croatia — countries that still uphold traditional European lifestyles and values.

Hungary will not leave the EU, but change it

At a joint press conference with Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenković, a staunch supporter of both the EU and NATO and an advocate for Ukraine’s fight against Russia, Lázár emphasised: “We Hungarians often argue with Brussels, but let me reiterate here at this thoroughly European event, we do not want to leave or break up the Union; we want to change it.”

Lázár insists that for the EU to be transformed, member states must first maximise their own potential—geographic, geopolitical, cultural, intellectual, and economic. Cooperation through smaller unions within the larger one, he says, is key to success.

Lázár: Orbán’s strongman and potential successor

Before the 2018 elections, many viewed János Lázár as a potential successor to Viktor Orbán. His meteoric rise from MP and mayor of Hódmezővásárhely to key government roles, including Minister of the Prime Minister’s Office, marked him as a prominent figure in Orbán’s circle.

After 2018, perhaps due to his strength, Orbán excluded him from the government but brought him back in 2022 to manage the crisis, aware that the new term would begin with tough austerity despite pre-election promises. Lázár decided about the closure of several infrastructure and transport projects after the 2022 victory, decisions for which he has since been criticised.

  1. The fact of the matter is that Hungary does not uphold European values and that is why the EU has suspended funding for failure to meet Rule Of Law conditions. The pedophile scandals Fidesz continues to suffer from are another example of the utter failure to uphold European or even basic Christian values. The suppression of the LGBTQ community with the banning of Pride marcches is another example of Hungarian failure to uphold European values and rights. The wholesale corruption and theft of public monies in another example of the failure of the Hungarian government’s failure. There is absolutely nothing Europe can learn from the present Fidesz government. We need to change Hungary and that will benefit the EU and Hungarians.

  2. Don’t worry, fam.

We will all still be alive to witness the disintegration of the European Union. It will crash and burn like every other corrupt, authoritarian, megalomaniacal vanity project.

    It will be glorious!
