Hungary’s newly elected Prime Minister Péter Magyar has issued a public appeal asking the media and the public to respect the privacy of his three sons, stressing that they should not be treated as public figures despite their father’s high-profile political role.

In a Facebook post shared on the first full day of his premiership, Magyar published a photograph taken on the steps of the Hungarian Parliament, where he appeared alongside his sons following his inauguration ceremony. The image immediately drew attention as a symbolic moment marking both his political ascent and his family’s visible presence during the historic occasion.

“They are still children” – a clear message to the public

Magyar emphasised that his children remain minors and should be allowed to grow up away from public scrutiny.

“They are still children. Just like your sons and daughters. They will not become public figures. I ask for this to be respected, and for everyone’s help so that they can have a childhood just like any other Hungarian young person,” he wrote.

He also underlined that his children are not involved in political life and should not be drawn into it by virtue of his position.

“They supported me through a difficult two-year journey”

Reflecting on his path to becoming prime minister, Magyar expressed gratitude towards his sons, noting that their support was crucial during what he described as a challenging two-year period leading up to his election.

He acknowledged that the past years had been difficult for them as well, and suggested that the coming period may not be any easier.

Without them, I would not have been able to go through this difficult journey, he said, adding that he had spent less time with his children since entering the public political arena in 2024.

Family moment on the steps of Parliament

The now widely shared photograph captures Magyar with his three sons on the steps of Parliament following his inauguration. He described the moment as one filled with “gratitude, pride and love”.

His former partner, former justice minister Judit Varga, is the mother of the children, who have occasionally appeared alongside their father during key political milestones, though not as public figures in their own right.
