Péter Magyar: Tisza party group not to vote for incumbent Budapest dept mayors, shirk coalitions

The Tisza party’s group in the Budapest Assembly will not vote for the incumbent deputy mayors, “as Budapest voters have clearly expressed their views on the work of the politicians of the Democratic Coalition and the Socialists,” and will not enter into coalitions with any party groups, the party’s leader, Péter Magyar, said on Facebook on Tuesday.

At the local elections on June 9th, Budapest voters have kept Gergely Karácsony in the mayor’s seat, he said. “They also clearly said they want nothing to do with the back-room deals and the old leftist direction of politics,” he added.

After the election, the party invited all party leaders for talks, and all but Fidesz have accepted, Magyar said. After those talks, Tisza decided to steer clear of coalitions in the Budapest Assembly, he said.

Magyar also called on Karácsony to nominate deputy mayors who could ensure the city’s stable financial situation and who had a chance of garnering a “convincing” majority in the assembly, adding that the new assembly “would clearly not vote for the incumbent deputy mayors”.

Magyar said the municipality was on the brink of insolvency mostly due to government restrictions. Karácsony and Prime Minister Viktor Orbán will have to regulate the relations between the government and the municipality in a public and transparent way, he added.
