PM Orbán invites Qatar investors to buy Budapest Airport

PM Viktor Orbán said in Qatar this week that he would welcome Qatari investors in buying Budapest Airport as strategic partners. It is an old desire of Hungary’s strongman to acquire the airport, but the owners do not want to sell it. Or at least they communicate so.
According to airportal.hu, Orbán talked about his plans on a podium talk at this week’s economic forum organised in the Gulf state. He said that even Qatari investors are interested in joining the bargain. The news outlet wrote talks are ongoing, and the Hungarian government would welcome Qatari investors apart from Hungarian ones. Furthermore, they would count on them not only in the buying-out process but also in developing Budapest Airport, one of Europe’s most competitive air gates.
The government has been negotiating with the Canadian, German and Singaporean owners. Based on press information, the deal was closed with a consortium of Hungarian enterprises in 2021. But the partakers postponed the agreement due to the unfavourable international and Hungarian financial situation.
Meanwhile, the owners of the Budapest Airport state they have long-term plans with the hub and would like to invest a lot of money to make their plans come true.
