VIDEO: Heavy police presence, roadblock in Budapest due to counter-terrorism operation – UPDATE: Action may be part of Hungary-Ukraine “spy war”

A large-scale police operation led by Hungary’s Counter-Terrorism Centre (Terrorelhárítási Központ, TEK) disrupted traffic in central Budapest on Friday evening, causing major congestion around Ferenciek Square for nearly an hour.

Heavy police action in downtown Budapest

The operation began shortly after 7 PM and involved TEK officers, the national police, and agents from the National Directorate-General for Aliens Policing, Magyar Hang reports. Eyewitnesses reported that heavily armed units surrounded a white car, removed an individual from the vehicle, and took them into custody. While the intervention lasted only a few minutes, the resulting traffic disruption extended well into the evening, with forensic work reportedly continuing around 8 PM.

Details not disclosed

According to Magyar Hang, their journalist witnessed the sudden appearance of numerous police officers and black vehicles in the area. Despite the high visibility of the action, authorities have not disclosed details about the identity of the person detained or the purpose of the operation. Watch Magyar Hang’s video below:

When contacted by the press, police spokesperson Kristóf Gál initially declined to comment. He later confirmed that the operation was a joint effort between TEK and the Directorate-General for Aliens Policing, but no further information has been released at this time.

The brief but intense action, and the secrecy surrounding it, have drawn public attention, particularly due to its impact on city traffic and the scale of the police response in one of Budapest’s busiest downtown areas.
