The government will propose removing lifelong benefits from presidents of the republic that have not completed their term, the prime minister said in parliament on Tuesday. The measure would concern Fidesz-elected Pál Schmitt (2010-2012), Katalin Novák (2022-2024), and Tamás Sulyok (2024- ).
Péter Magyar said the government had received “a vast number” of requests for such a measure, in a recently launched online survey concerning planned legislation. Magyar’s Tisza has supermajority in the Hungarian Parliament, so they could easily accept such a motion.
The prime minister said the government had received feedback from several thousand people in one day. Most people have suggested that deputies’ mandate should be restricted to 8 years rather than 12 as proposed by the government, he said. Similarly, participants in the consultations also said that the term of constitutional judges should be cut from 12 to 8 years, adding that the move would entail “another five vacancies” in the 15-strong body.
