Prime minister’s cabinet chief: Fidesz has political challengers but none are fit to govern
Budapest, January 14 (MTI) – Appearances on the surface suggest that today the ruling Fidesz party has no political competition but this is not the case, the prime minister’s cabinet chief said in an interview on Thursday.
Antal Rogan told online news site 888.hu that whereas there may be potential political challengers, none are fit to govern and so Fidesz is the only option for government.
Fidesz is the only party that has made job creation, support for families, cuts to public utility fees, and home-building national priority issues, which in turn makes Hungary a stable and reliable country.
Whereas the government does encourage Hungarians to have more children it has never forced this on anyone, he said, adding that the Hungarian state and politicians of the civic parties will not interfere in individuals’ decisions. But liberals should also refrain from a “dictatorship of taste”, he added.
He condemned all attacks by the opposition against the Budapest mayor and the government, adding that both the mayor and Prime Minister Viktor Orban have been working hard for years to ensure the operation of agglomeration transport.
“The government supports the mayor in every way and he has not lost the government’s trust; in fact quite the opposite,” Rogan said.
He said the next important task was preparation of the 2017 budget. Hungarian entrepreneurs and businesses have known for around six months the taxes they would be expected to pay from January 2016 and the government wants to ensure that parliament decides about next year’s taxes and budget by mid-2016.
The greatest challenge for 2017-2018 will be to increase wages and maintain economic competitiveness at the same time. Related talks are already under way with the chamber and employers’ organisations, and employees will also get involved because a joint solution is needed, he added.
Rogan said the European Union had failed to meet any of its challenges last year, including the debt crisis and migration, not to mention internal structural issues. It needs to be decided whether the EU should remain a union of nation states — in which case all concealed attempts to withdraw powers from the countries must be stopped — or a different direction taken towards a United States of Europe. Hungary can make stable economic plans only if the EU has the determination to recover from the economic crisis and stable political plans if Europe takes a decision to pursue a sensible solution in migration.
“The borders must be protected first and foremost, and only after that we can decide whom to take in, in what numbers and under what conditions. We can make stable plans only if the EU decision-making procedures are applied to everyone equally and there are no double standards. Currently Brussels’ actions are not in this spirit”, Rogan said.
