Prisoner escape in Hungary: Nigerian man caught after police stopped his train
The Kaposvár District Prosecutor’s Office has indicted a Nigerian man in his 30s for the crime of prisoner escape in violation of the rules of coercive measures. The case was tried in an accelerated procedure.
According to the prosecutor’s office, the man removed the tracking device from his hand and tried to flee abroad to escape the criminal proceedings against him.
According to the indictment, the man accused of drug trafficking has been under criminal supervision since May 2021, which was recently extended by the Metropolitan Court, which ruled that the accused can leave the administrative territory of Kaposvár only with a special permit. His movements must be controlled by the competent police with a tracking device.
However, at the end of March 2024, the man, who was staying in a village near Kaposvár, removed the technical device from his hands and then traveled by public transport first to Kaposvár, from where he intended to go first to Budapest and then to Germany. The man was arrested and taken into custody by police officers of the Fonyódi Police Station, who stopped the train to Budapest at Balatonlelle.
While in custody, the Kaposvár District Prosecutor’s Office brought the accused to court. The Kaposvár District Court found him guilty as charged and sentenced him to 70 days imprisonment.
