Protest against higher education law held at parliament
Budapest (MTI) – Some 150 people protested against the centralisation of higher education and the decrease in universities’ autonomy in front of the parliament building on Sunday.
The event organised by the Network of Academics (OHA) and the Our Universities in Danger Group was addressed by Balazs Majtenyi, an associate professor at ELTE Budapest University, who said the government had used unfair methods and transformed the system without consultations.
As a result, 60 departments have been cancelled and the National University of Public Service has “monopolised” training in public administration, he added.
A symbolic football match was staged at the demonstration between the universities and the government where “politicians” received a larger half and a smaller goal, as well as constant help from the referee.
