Outrageous racist attack in Budapest: Foreign man beaten because of his skin colour – ‘Migrant, go home!’
Five people are accused of attacking a man because of his skin colour and shouting “migrant, go home!” in Budapest.
The Pest Central District Court held a preparatory session on 9 May 2024 in a criminal case in which five people were accused by the prosecution of committing violence against a member of the community in a group, as accomplices, Telex reports.
According to the indictment, on the afternoon of 20 December 2020, the five men noticed a man from the Arab ethnic group at a tram stop because of his appearance and decided to assault him due to his racial difference and ethnicity.
The victim also noticed the defendants, whose appearance (clothing and hairstyle) bore the characteristics of a xenophobic and racist person.
“Migrant, go home!”
First, the drunken primary defendant approached the man, then he was joined by defendants II and V, who started to follow the victim backing away from them. The accused were shouting “migrant, go home”. Finally, all five suspects gathered around the man, and defendant IV even punched him.
The victim then started to run and accused I and II started to chase him. When they caught up with the victim, the second accused pushed him away and the third accused took him to the ground and started to fight with him.
The victim on the ground was kicked by the second accused. When the man managed to get up, the third accused tripped him up, the first and second accused hit him all over his body, and the first accused even spat on him. The victim, who suffered injuries that would heal within 8 days as a result of the assault, managed to flee the scene.
The prosecution charges the accused with the crime of violence against a member of the community committed in a group.
The defendants were sentenced to different lengths of imprisonment, suspended for different lengths of probation. The judgment is not final.
