Record number of heart transplants at Varosmajor clinic
Budapest (MTI) – A record number of 50 heart transplants have been carried out at the Budapest Semmelweis University’s Vascular Surgery Department this year, the clinic said on Friday.
The main trigger behind the number has been that doctors “seized every opportunity” to help patients in need and conducted when possible two operations on the same day, the clinic said.
The 50th operation was carried out on December 17th on a 41-year-old patient. He is in a satisfactory condition and is expected to be discharged within three weeks, said the clinic.
The preparation, conduct and post treatment of a transplant operation requires on average a team of about 30 doctors and 60 assistants, it added.
The first successful heart transplant was carried out in Hungary by Professor Zoltan Szabo in 1992. Since then altogether 339 such operations have been carried out in the country, 310 of them at the Varosmajor clinic.
There are only ten heart centres around the world where 50 heart transplants are carried out per year.
