India’s 77th Republic Day marked in Budapest, highlighting the depth of India–Hungary relations

The Embassy of India in Budapest hosted a reception to celebrate the 77th Republic Day of India on 26 January 2026 at the Hungarian Heritage House, Budapest, between 5 and 7 PM.

The reception was graced by Dr. Boglárka Illés, State Secretary for Bilateral Relations, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade of Hungary, as the Chief Guest and official representative of the host government. The event was attended by several distinguished dignitaries, Members of Parliament, senior government officials, Ambassadors, members of the diplomatic corps, representatives of the Indian community, and friends of India. Approximately 350 guests attended the reception, reflecting the strong, cordial, and multifaceted relations between India and Hungary.

In his address marking India’s 77th Republic Day, the Ambassador of India extended warm greetings and reflected on the deep historical and strategic affinity between India and Hungary, describing the relationship as one built on shared values, sovereignty, and cultural self-confidence. Praising Hungary’s strong sense of national identity, he noted that

“Hungarians, guarding a thousand years of history in the Carpathian Basin, have taught the world that identity is an act of will,”

drawing a clear parallel with India’s own civilizational continuity. Emphasising that openness and tradition are not contradictory, he added that “to be truly global, one must be proudly local.”

The Ambassador highlighted the expanding scope of bilateral cooperation, from trade and investment to science and space exploration, pointing to the recent joint Indian–Hungarian astronaut mission as a defining symbol of the partnership’s new depth. “When India and Hungary collaborate, the sky is not the limit; it is merely the baseline,” he said, underlining both nations’ shared ambition. Stressing that cultural exchange and people-to-people ties remain the foundation of the relationship, he expressed confidence that upcoming bilateral consultations would further elevate India–Hungary cooperation in the years ahead.
