Serious proposal: Belgium seeks to remove Hungary’s veto power in EU decision-making

Brussels is seeking “to repress pro-peace forces”, making a last-ditch effort to remove the final obstacle to the war “by silencing [Hungary] or excluding it from decision-making,” the foreign minister, Péter Szijjártó, said on Monday.

Szijjártó was reacting to a recent remark by Hadja Lahbib, the foreign minister of current European Union president Belgium, who said in a recent interview to Politico that the Article 7 procedure against Hungary should be carried to completion with the possible outcome of Hungary being stripped of its voting rights.

“We have a Europe that is making difficult headway, with unfortunately some states — one state in particular — increasingly adopting a transactional, blocking and veto attitude,” Belgian Foreign Minister Hadja Lahbib told POLITICO in an interview.

“I think we need to have the courage to make decisions: go right to the end of Article 7, activate Article 7 right to the end, which provides for the end of the right of veto,” she said.

Brussels “is enveloped in panic”, with only six days left before the EP elections, Szijjártó said. “Six days are left for people to pull the brake on the apparently unstoppable pro-war train from rushing to its final destination, a third world war,” he said, adding that “the brake can be pulled by European people on June 9”.

“On June 9, we’ll need very strong support and a big win so that we can withstand the pressure in the weeks and months to come and forcefully promote peace and act against Europe’s preparations for a third world war,” Szijjártó said.

“Brussels, the liberal mainstream, visibly dislikes it, but the [Hungarian] government won’t give in to pressure and will soon take over the European Union’s presidency … and do everything in the interest of peace,” he said.

“I am asking all of you to be there on June 9 and make it clear that it is unacceptable that they want to silence the last voice of peace in Europe,” Szijjártó said.

As we wrote a few days ago, Brussels ideology more dangerous than Putin, PM Orbán said.

As we wrote today, the Hungarian government has pushed back on EU measures to send aid to Ukraine on several occasions. While in March and May, the country’s delegation refrained from vetoing the enlargement of the European Peace Facility, the government is now actively blocking payments from reaching Ukraine, read our article here.
