Severe decrease in the number of Hungarian practitioners has not stopped since 2010
Although the Hungarian government tried to support the field of practitioners and encourage young students to choose this career, it is still not popular, and many practices have been closed in the past few years.
According to mfor.hu, several changes need to be made in order to stop the problem connected to practitioners. They believe that these steps need to decrease the amount of administrative work and emphasise the real work doctors need to do every day.
With this step, doctors would feel like doctors again and not like some kind of administrative worker.
The future is threating, as the number of available doctors is getting close to retirement age (the available doctors are between 55–64 years old), and there are not enough young candidates for these practices. Although the current Orbán government has been leading the country since 2010, changes have not been made since then. In 2010, there were 176 practices with no doctors. This number was 402 last year, which means that 29% of all Hungarian practices are open regularly. Some changes were introduced in the last nine years but could not stop the rapid decrease.
Currently, there are 399 empty practices in Hungary.
The situation is the worst in Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén and Békés Counties, and there are also serious problems in Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok and Bács-Kiskun Counties. The government tried and is still trying to support this field as best they can, but further changes and more effective motivation are still needed.
