Authorities have imposed a temporary swimming ban at Helikon Beach in Keszthely after routine water quality testing found the latest sample did not meet the required standards.
The announcement was made on Wednesday by the Municipality of Keszthely, following a decision by the Public Health Department of the Zala County Government Office. Officials said the temporary restriction was introduced to protect public health after the most recent water sample produced an “unsatisfactory result” during regular monitoring.
Other Keszthely beaches remain safe
The municipality stressed that the issue is limited to Helikon Beach. The city’s other two beaches, Keszthely City Beach and Libás Beach, continue to have excellent water quality, and swimming there remains completely safe.
New water quality tests will be carried out at Helikon Beach in the coming days. The beach will reopen as soon as health authorities confirm that the water once again complies with safety standards.
One of Lake Balaton’s newest free beaches
The temporary closure comes just a few months after Helikon Beach became one of the most notable free-access beaches on Lake Balaton.
Since 1 May, visitors have been able to use the municipally owned beach free of charge after the town removed the fences that had previously enclosed the paid beach. The symbolic dismantling of the barriers was carried out jointly by the mayor and local volunteers.
The current restriction is temporary, and local authorities have thanked visitors for their patience and understanding while waiting for the follow-up laboratory results.
