Single-use plastics will be banned in Hungary as per new environmental plan

plastic, pollution

Hungary’s government is committed to taking effective action against climate change and preserving the environment for future generations, the government spokeswoman and an innovation and technology ministry official said on Saturday.

In their video message on Facebook, Alexandra Szentkiralyi and Attila Steiner, the state secretary for energy and climate policy, noted that the government launched its climate and nature protection action plan one year ago.

Measures implemented as part of the plan have included the cleansing of the Danube and Tisza rivers of plastics and other pollutants, Szentkiralyi said.

Under the plan, 90 percent of the energy generated in Hungary will be carbon-free by 2030, and the country aims to achieve climate neutrality by 2050, she noted.

The government also supports the use of electric vehicles, and has contributed to the procurement of 2,000 electric bicycles, 950 electric cars and 300 electric scooters so far, Szentkiralyi said.

She also noted a new afforestation scheme meant to help grow some 650 hectares of new forest across the country.

So far, 1.1 million of the planned 3 million trees have been planted, she said, adding that the scheme aims to increase the proportion of Hungary’s forest area to 27 percent by 2030.

Steiner noted that the government this past year also launched a cleanup campaign, which, along with a smartphone app, contributed to the collection of 25,000 tonnes of waste around the country.

From this summer, the government is banning single-use plastics and will encourage recycling and the reprocessing of waste, he said.

The state secretary noted that the Matrai plant, Hungary’s last coal-fired plant, will be upgraded to meet climate protection goals.

Hungary is also increasing its solar capacities, he said, noting that some 80,000 households, businesses and public institutions were now powered in part by solar energy.

The construction of the unique, new Tisza Bridge on a spectacular video

tisza bridge

The construction works of the Tisza Bridge of the M44 motorway are progressing well. Duna Aszfalt, the company carrying out the construction, shared a spectacular video about the progress of the bridge, the structure of which is unique in Europe.

According to Origo, last November marked a milestone in the construction of the bridge because the two parts of the bridge finally met in the centre. The construction project is related to the construction of the 10-kilometre section of the M44 road between Lakitelek and Tiszakürt, which will be implemented with the investment of Nemzeti Infrastruktúra Fejlesztő Zrt. (National Infrastructure Development Inc.).

What makes the bridge in Tiszaug special is its unique structure, of which no other has been built in Europe so far, and only a few similar ones exist in the world.

The total length of the bridge is 556 metres, of which a 307-metre-long section provides traffic over the river.

The contractor published a video about the works of the specially designed bridge:

The pylons have a deformed elliptical shape, which makes the appearance of the bridge very unique. The structure is reminiscent of a covered wagon. The bridge deck will be attached to the pylons with a fan-shaped free cable arrangement. The final height of the bridge pylons will be 41.6 meters.

President contacts Romania over river pollution

river tisza pollution

President János Áder sent a letter to Klaus Iohannis, his Romanian counterpart, on Friday, calling on him to take steps over the latter country’s repeated pollution of Hungarian rivers.

In his letter, Áder noted that the Hungarian section of the river Szamos had recently been polluted by heavy metals from unused mines in northern Romania. Áder asked his counterpart to promote his country’s meeting obligations under bilateral and international environmental agreements.

Hungarian authorities were alerted to the pollution in the Szamos on Thursday.

Áder said in his letter that concentrations of zinc, copper and cadmium were still “above acceptable levels”.

It is not yet known what impact the current pollution will have on water quality and the flora and fauna of the river, Áder said, but added that “what we are facing is the umpteenth occasion of water pollution from Romania”. He noted that similar disasters had happened in 2000, 2013 and 2018, when toxic waste from unused mines in Romania had reached Hungarian riverways.

“I am convinced that we must resolve this dangerous situation without delay,” Áder said, adding that the ecosystems of Hungarian rivers have been “extremely fragile since the devastating cyanide spill of 2000”.

“Mutually agreed obligations” under international agreements offer legal ways “to take a firm stance against polluters” and to prevent further damage to the environment, Áder said in his letter.

Water management authority alerted of Szamos River pollution from Romania

tisza-river-plastic-waste-hungary

The national water management authority (OVF) said on Wednesday that it had been alerted of heavy metal pollution to arrive in Hungary over the River Szamos from Romania.

The Romanian side had sent the information over the Principal International Alert Centre (PIAC), showing that heavy metal pollution resulting from mining spoil is expected to arrive in Hungary at midnight on Wednesday.

The pollution is of unknown composition and volume, OVF said.

The OVF director general has ordered the setting up of a national technical control body which will be tasked with coordinating and managing protection.

For that matter, last week the conservative opposition Jobbik party filed an environment pollution report with authorities over communal waste drifting on the Hungarian section of the Tisza river and its tributaries, the Kraszna and Szamos rivers, near Hungary’s eastern borders.

Jobbik files report over river pollution near eastern border

The conservative opposition Jobbik party said on Wednesday that it has filed an environment pollution report with authorities over communal waste drifting on the Hungarian section of the Tisza river and its tributaries, the Kraszna and Szamos rivers, near Hungary’s eastern borders.

Speaking at a press conference in front of Ukraine’s consular office in Nyiregyhaza, in eastern Hungary, Béla Adorján, a councillor of the local county assembly, said Jobbik had clear evidence that the waste causing continued pollution on the rivers over the past several years originates in neighbouring Romania and Ukraine.

He said “courtesy moves in diplomacy” had led nowhere in the past twenty years, adding that government programmes of removing drift waste from the river had only been “ad-hoc emergency steps” and had not resulted in the eradication of the pollution.

Csaba Gyüre, a lawmaker for the party, said that under international treaties, Hungary could have sought reimbursement of waste removal costs by the two neighbouring countries, but had failed to make use of that option.

Hungarian president writes to Ukraine, Romania counterparts over river waste

river-tisza-waste-hungary-ukraine

President János Áder has written to his Ukrainian and Romanian counterparts complaining about large quantities of plastic bottles and other waste coming into Hungary via the Tisza and Szamos rivers.

Áder asked Volodymyr Zelensky and Klaus Johannis to intervene to get the authorities to deal with the matter.

The letters posted to the Office of the President’s website on Tuesday note that floods sent currently epidemiologically dangerous waste over the borders, with an impact on fishing and tourism as well as on wildlife.

The president noted the Hungarian government had turned to the authorities of the neighboring countries several times to little avail.

The main problem is waste dumping in the floodplains of rivers, he added.

The Tisza has been encumbered by 2,258 cubic meters of solid waste so far this year, Áder wrote. Fully 938 cubic meters of waste was removed from Szamos on June 13.

“I find it disappointing that the pollution … has not ceased,”

the presiden wrote, adding that the waste posed a lasting threat to the rivers’ fragile ecosystem. Áder said this was not worthy of European standards.

László Palkovics, Minister of Innovation and Technology, inaugurated the last 67 kilometres of the bike path around the lake on June 20. He added that finishing the project was an old promise of the government, which spent 3.1 billion HUF (almost 9 million EUR) on the last 6.5-kilometre-long phase running between Poroszló and Tiszafüred. The path is 2.5 metres wide, and they separated it from Main Road nr 33 so people can cycle there safely, Szeretlek Magyarorszag reported.

Mr Palkovics said that, as part of the project, they built four additional bridges on the lake. The development serves touristic goals, but it also

preserves natural beauties since the bike path fits its environment well,

he concluded.

According to tiszataviokocentrum.hu, the bikeway offers great views of the landscape – you can overlook the islands, the floodplain forests, and the beautiful water surfaces while riding a bike. There is only a difference of 1 metre in altitude, so you can take a short trip without training for it. Ferries cross the lake at several points, or you can take combined boat-bicycle trips using a rented boat available at the ports. Moreover, the Bike Centre in Tiszafüred provides cyclists with a variety of services.

Lake Tisza (in Hungarian: Tisza-tó) is the largest artificial lake in Hungary. Located at the southeastern edge of Heves County, it was born in 1973 thanks to the Tisza River flood control project. Its filling finished in the 1990s, resulting in a 127 km² surface area of water. There is an eco-centre in Poroszló erected to collect and display the nature and wildlife of the Tisza River Valley and Lake Tisza, and it opened to the public in 2012. Discover the fabulous Hungarian wine region, Tokaj – VIDEO

tokaj vineyard

Tokaj Wine Region is one of the most beautiful places in Northeast Hungary, with a population of 5,000 inhabitants. The settlement is located at the confluence of the rivers Tisza and Bodrog, at the foot of Tokaj Mountains. Thanks to the rivers and smaller mountains, the area has a very diverse landscape, providing breathtaking panorama. Even though the city has become world-famous for its wine region, this part of the country is not crowded at all. Fortunately, this is why natural values have been successfully preserved.

Tokaj Wine Region – World Heritage Site

Tokaj Wine Region was labelled as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2002 due to the distinctive character of the wine region. The Historic-Cultural Landscape consists of 28 villages and 7000 classified vineyards.

The peculiar micro-climate of the north-eastern mountains of Hungary makes it possible to produce aszú wines, which is provided exclusively in this part of the world.

This sweet golden wine is a special dessert, also called as the “Wine of Kings, King of Wines” by the famous emperor King Louis XIV of France. The original Latin text – “vinum regum, rex vinorum” – is still written on Aszú bottles. There are several types of aszú, which are also indicated on the glasses with 5 to 6 “puttonys”.

Programme Guide in Tokaj

Thanks to its diverse landscapes, several walking tours and hiking programmes are provided in the region. Furthermore, the nearby rivers of Tokaj – River Bodrog and Tisza – offer numerous sport and entertainment opportunities. One of the most popular is the canoe trip from Tokaj to Sárospatak. Those who would like to relax can visit a newly designed spa on the opposite bank of the Tisza, which attracts people especially on hot summer days.

Of course, we cannot miss wine lovers either who can get an insight into the process of winemaking, visit some spectacular vineyards, or taste the irresistible wines of Tokaj.

Csíksomlyó pilgrimage and Tisza-blooming Hungaricums

csíksomlyó pilgrimage

The Pentecostal farewell and shrine, the Tisza-blooming, as well as others have been added to the Collection of Hungaricums. The Hungarian Depository has also been expanded by seven new items.

The Hungaricum Committee held its 25th annual meeting on Thursday in Budapest, reported Index. At the meeting, István Nagy, the Minister of Agriculture, announced the newest additions to the Collection.

According to the decision of the Hungaricum Committee: “in the future, the Pentecostal farewell and shrine of Csíksomlyó will enrich the collection, which is one of the most significant religious holidays of all Hungarians, a symbol of national unity,” states the announcement of the Ministry of Agriculture.

Classic Hungarian sabre-fencing, the foundation of Hungarian swords school, has also been added to the collection.

Mayflies are well-known for their swarming – this is what they call “Tisza-blooming” in Hungary, as it looks like the river is blooming. The phenomenon is a protected natural and landscape value, and is special in a global sense, thus being a new addition to Hungaricums.

Rosary of Szőreg is another newcomer to the list. It is famous for its tolerance for frost, has a long blooming period, and its petals display intense colours, making it a popular export product.

The eight new items which have been added to the Hungarian Depository are: Hajdúnánás straw processing as a traditional domestic activity, the Freedom of Religion Act of 1568, the Spring Memorial Campaign, cherries from Újfehértó, the cross-stitch embroidery of Bereg, the ruins of the church and the stones of Aracs, the wagon car, as well as the Anna Ball in Balatonfüred.

Waste from Ukraine swarmed River Tisza – PHOTOS

Rainfall in the area of the reservoir of Upper-Tisza has led to a small flood wave in the Hungarian section of the River Tisza, said Gabriella Siklós, a spokeswoman for the National Water Management Agency, who reported about two purification operations to Index.

At the same time as the flood happened on Thursday afternoon, the monitoring service of the Upper-Tisza Regional Environment and Water Directorate – thanks to their installed camera system – indicated that the river carried municipal waste from Ukraine with an intensity of 20 pieces of waste every minute.

A further 6 mm of precipitation is expected in the area of the Upper-Tisza reservoir, which will cause a further rise in water levels, and the flooding is expected to carry more bottles and other waste down the river.

Unfortunately, similar things happen at the River Tisza quite frequently. Last December, the Tisza was cleaned of 10,000 tonnes of waste thanks to a newly developed dam.

The head of the Board of Directors for the disposal of waste had ordered a third-degree water quality damage control contingency on February 27th, starting from 2 pm. They removed the waste with the help of the available heavy machinery. On Thursday evening, the machines were set up in line, and some time later, bottles and other municipal waste had been removed from the river.

Water Directorate personnel will work day-and-night to clean the river if necessary.

Meanwhile, on 28 February, the cleaning of the forest at Tiszaszalka started. One of the most polluted forests in the Hungarian section of the River Tisza will be cleared of debris during the weekend. For the first time, more than fifty Ukrainian water specialists are participating in the action at the invitation of the Hungarian Upper-Tisza Regional Environment and Water Directorate.

We have some good news about the Tisza as well. As part of a new cycle track, the construction of a steel cycle bridge is expected to be finished soon. If you would like to have some adventure, you should go and try the cycle track around Lake Tisza during the summer. And thanks to the amazing determination of PET Kupa and many civilians, it will be as waste-free as possible.

PET Kupa members, civilians, and members of the Water Directorate take part in the cleaning process. The General Directorate of Water Management is assisting the action by providing a complete infrastructure, experts, and volunteers for remediation.

EU protected forests cut down in Hungary, WWF not happy

Frosty forest hungary

Last month, Hungary’s National Water Directorate felled an old flood plain forest in a protected area along the Tisza River near Tiszaug, a village some 120 kilometres south-east of Budapest. The EU protects parts of the area as a Natura 2000 site for providing a core breeding and resting place to rare and threatened species including black storks. Environmental group WWF has accused Hungarian authorities of illegally cutting down a forest protected by the European Union reports Euro News.

According to the WWF, flood plain forests — an area of land near the banks of a river prone to flooding — are among the most endangered habitat in Hungary with their surface having shrunk to less than 1% of what it was before river regulations came into force. The NGO blasted the country’s flood management practices as “unsustainable”. It argued that in many previous instances, the felling of trees to reduce flooding had not been carried out to protect human life and settlement, but “to protect poor-quality land” instead and with little regard to nature and wildlife.

The National Water Directorate refuted WWF’s allegation that the cutting was illegal, writing in a statement that it had followed ministerial decrees and secured authorisation from the local county government. It added that cutting down mature trees is an established policy to rejuvenate forests and that it was carried out in January not to disturb the reproductive period of the rare species who call the area home.

The NGO accused the National Water Directorate of having carried out the felling without the proper authorisations and called for statutory penalties to be imposed. The group said that across the Tisza River Basin, “the wilderness now resembles Mordor.”

“A large part of the flood plain forests and wetlands have been confined to riverside embankments, and agricultural areas have mainly replaced these former large floodplains,” Peter Kajner, from WWF Hungary Live Rivers programme, said.

Five migrants attempt to enter Hungary in rubber dinghy

migration in rubber dinghy

Five Syrian migrants attempted to enter Hungary by sailing up the River Tisza in an inflatable dinghy. Hungarian police apprehended three of them but are still looking for two other people in the area, a spokeswoman of the Csongrád County police department told MTI on Saturday.

The rubber dinghy, sailing from the Serbian side towards Hungary, was spotted by the radar of an army boat patrolling the river at 10.30pm on Friday.

The patrolmen found the dinghy stuck in driftwood a few metres from the Hungarian side, with two men sitting in it. They said that three of their companions had tried to jump ashore but fell in the water.

One of them was clinging to the driftwood and was rescued by the patrolmen but there is a search still underway for another two migrants.

In 2009, a group of Kosovan migrants died trying to cross into Hungary by boat on the Tisza.

Amazing! River Tisza cleaned of 10,000 tonnes of waste at Kisköre

tisza river kisköre dam

Some 10,000 tonnes of waste and flotsam has been removed from the River Tisza at Kiskore, then selected and partly recycled in a three-way cooperation between a civil organisation, the authorities and companies, PET Kupa said in a statement on Wednesday.

Floating communal and plant waste covered 17,000 square metres upstream of the Kisköre dam, about twice the usual amount arriving with the spring floods, the organisation said. At its thickest, the accumulated waste measured over three metres, it added.

The Kisköre dam is the first in Hungary designed to stop debris from floating further downstream, the statement said.

PET Kupa, the national water management authority and Coca-Cola worked together with volunteers for five months to separate and package recyclable waste, the statement said.

Romanian ex-president: “The real Romania is from Tisza” – VIDEO!

Traian Băsescu said that Romania should gain a quarter of today’s Hungary in an interview during the congress of the European People’s Party (EPP) in Zagreb (Croatia) after he made it clear that he has a special relationship with Hungarian PM Viktor Orbán.

Azonnali.hu asked the former Romanian president about what he thinks about working together with the Democratic Alliance of Hungarians in Romania (RMDSZ), why Romanian politicians never promise anything for local Hungarians, and what Romania would do if its borders reached the Tisza so Bucharest would have to deal with a much bigger Hungarian minority.

Traian Băsescu said that he did not miss Fidesz from the congress of the EPP (where they were not invited because their membership is suspended), but he believes that they should remain a member of the party. He added that he has a special relationship with PM Viktor Orbán, so he supports him.

But he also said that

he does not like that Hungary supports autonomy movements

in Romania (where the Szeklers would like to create an autonomous region, but Bucharest does not even want to hear about it).

About the Democratic Alliance of Hungarians in Romania, he said that he did not support the cooperation with them when he was president because they are not loyal to any Romanian parties. He said that Romanian politicians do not promise anything to the Hungarians living in Romania because they now have a president from the German minority (probably meaning that Klaus Johannis, in this regard, is himself a promise).

He added that

everybody should stick to the constitution of Romania.

He supports Johannis in the second round of the presidential election because the other alternative is a Socialist, and he has been fighting the Socialists all his life. And they are not dead yet, they are extremely dangerous, they can return any time to the government because they have the biggest organisation in the country.

About the Hungarian-Romanian relationship, he said that it is OK. But he does not like that the Hungarian foreign minister forbade the staff of the Hungarian embassies to celebrate December 1st. That is the national day of Romania, but it is a tragedy for Hungary at the same time because it commemorates the loss of Transylvania and many other territories with almost 2 million Hungarians living there.

He also said that Romania begins at the Tisza.

However, when the reporter asked what Romania would do with a much bigger Hungarian community, Băsescu only said “Look the propaganda, the stupid propaganda of the Hungarians. They are extremely aggressive.”

This is not the first time that Traian Basescu says something anti-Hungarian: in 2017, he drew attention to himself by saying that all Romanians should boycott MOL gas stations in the country because the company displayed maps of Szeklerland at their gas stations (Bucharest does not recognise Szeklerland as a separate and specific region of Romania). Before, he attacked legislation and Romanian governing parties for allowing the 15th of March to become a national day for Hungarians in Romania.

The relationship between Hungary and Romania has not been too good lately, more details HERE.

Construction of the new Tisza Bridge is almost ready! – PHOTOS

Tisza bike bridge

A new cycle track is being built between Poroszló and Tiszafüred. The last piece of the 273m-long Tisza Bridge has just been installed. The aim of this project is for people to be able to cycle around Lake Tisza once construction is finished.

Lake Tisza is the largest artificial lake in Hungary. It is located at the South-Eastern edge of Heves county. The lake is 27 km in length, with an average depth of 1.3 m and a maximum depth of 17 m.

When the most recent construction works are finished, the entire cycle track around Lake Tisza will be 65 km long, Magyar Építők writes.

Hódút Ltd. is responsible for the construction of the newest addition to the cycle track. The newest bike trail will be 6.5 km long, and it will start at the dam of Lake Tisza in Poroszló and end in Ady Endre and Ártéri Streets in Tiszafüred.

The construction of the bridge is very complex, as it has a 350-tonne steel structure that was assembled on the riverside assembly site. The bridge’s elements are floated into position by two 40-meter barges, and each is lifted onto the console structures by cranes. It took two cranes and over one hour to position the last piece of the new bike bridge into its final place.

Clearing River Tisza from 8,000 tons waste to take 4 months

Clearing the River Tisza from an estimated 8,000 tons of waste accumulated during the spring floods will take at least four months, the director of the General Directorate of Water Management (OVF) told a press conference on Tuesday.

Floating communal and plant waste covers 17,000 square metres on the upstream side of the Kisköre dam, István Láng said.

At its thickest, the accumulated waste measures over three metres, he added.

This year’s pollution is about twice the amount of waste habitually collecting at the dam in the spring, Láng said. Clearing it will require the cooperation of water management experts, civil organisations and companies, he said.

The OVF has expanded warehouse space in its winter port and employees work in 12-hour shifts to move the waste onto a 200-ton barge, he added.
