Swimmer Katinka Hosszú was in the area where the terrorist attack took place in Stockholm
Not long before the terrorist attack in Stockholm yesterday, Olympic Champion Swimmer Katinka Hosszú and her husband visited the area where the attack took place.
Luckily, they had left the place before the attack happened.
Katinka Hosszú arrived in Stockholm on Thursday to compete in an international swimming tournament.
This is what Katinka wrote on Facebook:
“It was heartbreaking to hear the news about the attack in Stockholm. My heart goes out to the families and friends who were affected. We were walking around that area just before but fortunately we got to the hotel when the attack happened. Thanks for all your concerned and caring messages, we are ok.”

Hungarian leaders condole on Stockholm attack
Budapest, April 7 (MTI) – Hungarian leaders have expressed condolences to their Swedish counterparts concerning the Stockholm attack carried out on Friday.
President János Áder sent a telegram to King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden, expressing his and the Hungarian people’s “deepest sympathies” to the victims of the “devious terrorist act” and their families.
In a letter written to his Swedish counterpart, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán expressed his and the Hungarian people’s sympathies and pledged support to the victims and their families, saying that “we cannot give in to senseless violence”.
The attack was also condemned by the Hungarian foreign ministry.
On Friday afternoon, a truck drove into a crowd on a shopping street in Stockholm, killing three people in what the Swedish prime minister said seem to be a terrorist attack.

Hungarian foreign minister responds to Swedish counterpart’s remarks over new asylum rules
Budapest, March 9 (MTI) – The Hungarian government gives priority to the security of the Hungarian people over allowing illegal migrants coming from a safe third country to enter Hungary and move around uncontrolled in the country, the foreign minister said on Thursday, in response to the Swedish foreign minister’s remarks in a local daily.
Péter Szijjártó responded to Margot Wallstrom voicing concern in Goteborgs-Posten’s Thursday edition over the “consequences” of the package of amendments Hungary’s parliament passed on Tuesday to tighten asylum regulations.
Wallstrom said that international rights groups including Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International were rightly concerned that the measures could prove to be not only unlawful but, in the first place, “inhumane”. The Swedish minister insisted that the issue should be put on the agenda of the European Union.
Wallstrom also noted a meeting of foreign ministers where it became apparent that Hungary was one of the countries that had “purchased quantities of barbed wire” whereas Sweden had purchased blankets which she said illustrated well the difference in approach.
Szijjártó told MTI that the Swedish foreign minister was indeed right in stating a difference in the two countries’ approach.
He argued that while Sweden had been aiding illegal immigrants, it had recently failed to help an injured Hungarian girl to stay in Sweden with her only relatives, even despite funding offered in the contribution by the Hungarian government.
“This is a hypocritical approach which the Hungarian government cannot and does not want to subscribe to,” Szijjártó said.
It is up to the Swedish government to decide whom it considers important, and this is what the Hungarian government does, too, Szijjártó said.
Hungary rejects allegations of police violence against migrants – UPDATE
Budapest, March 6 (MTI) – Hungary’s interior ministry on Monday “categorically rejected” reports in domestic and foreign media alleging that Hungarian border police regularly commit violence against migrants.
The ministry reacted to a fresh article by Swedish paper Aftonbladet, in which refugees who had made it to the Serbian-Hungarian border and representatives of medical charity Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) recount incidents of violence against migrants by Hungarian authorities.
The ministry said in a statement that if an illegal migrant “gives the slightest implication” during questioning that they had been assaulted, the police submit the minutes of the questioning sessions to the prosecutor’s office. It said that out of the eight such cases that had been referred to the prosecutor’s office, six had already turned out to be “baseless hearsay”.
As part of collaborative operations organised by European border agency Frontex, there are currently 36 guest police officers conducting border patrols in Hungary, but so far none of them have reported any incidents of human rights abuses or violence against migrants, it added.
Although Aftonbladet said it was unable to verify the validity of the personal accounts given in the article, the media reports it as fact that migrants are abused in Hungary, the ministry said.
Earlier in the day, Gabor Fodor, head of the opposition Liberal Party, called on the government to launch an investigation into the allegations made in the paper. Referring to the reports in Aftonbladet, Fodor said that many migrants in northern Serbia had been treated with injuries suggesting that Hungary’s border police had “applied physical coercion against people attempting entry”. He also noted that the problem had been reported earlier.
Parliament will vote on a set of amendment proposals to Hungary’s asylum regulations on Tuesday. If passed into law, the bill before parliament would prohibit asylum-seekers from leaving the transit zones set up on the border until their cases are ruled on. The bill also proposes that authorities should be allowed to take illegal migrants back to the transit zones from any given spot of the country, regardless of where they have been apprehended. Under Hungary’s current asylum laws, illegal entrants can only be escorted back if stopped within eight kilometres of the border.
UPDATE
The national police headquarters said on its website that during a Frontex meeting in February, member states were presented a letter dated January 24 by the organisation’s Director Fabrice Leggeri which showed that disproportionate use of force by police had not been reported and the allegations about migrants’ human rights being violated could not be confirmed. Leggeri added that representatives of the European Commission paid a visit to the Hungarian-Serbian border on October 18-19, 2016 and they found no proof of police abusing their power, the statement added.

Pope’s visit to Sweden could be key point in Reformation anniversary, says Lutheran bishop
Budapest, January 25 (MTI) – Pope Francis’ October visit to Sweden to mark next year’s 500th anniversary of the start of the Protestant Reformation in Europe could be a key point in the anniversary and will “steer it towards ecumenism”, Lutheran Bishop Tamas Fabiny said.
The Vatican and the Lutheran World Federation (LWF) announced on Monday that Pope Francis will visit Lund, Sweden on October 31 and will lead a common worship service with Lutheran World Federation President Bishop Dr Munib A. Younan.
LWF Vice President Fabiny said the pope’s visit to the city of Lund where the federation was founded in 1947 will be a symbolic one. The fact that the city was Catholic for 500 years and has been Lutheran for the last 500 years further makes it a fitting location for a commemoration, he said.
Fabiny said the LWF has maintained the belief since its founding that only believers who are ecumenical can be Lutheran.
Bomb alert at Budapest and Stockholm British schools
The police evacuated the British International School because of bomb threat in Budapest on Tuesday. At the same time, there was bomb alert at the British International School of Sweden as well, origo.hu reported.
Several police cars appeared at the foundation school and evacuated the institution in the 3rd district. The disaster management and demolition experts were also present.
The students were sent home because of the threat, so the school was empty by 11 o’clock. The policemen, who performed the evacuation, did not inform origo.hu. They said the Budapest Police Headquarters (BRFK) press office would tell additional details.
It is not the first time when the school has been threatened. Most recently, the British International School received a phone call about a bomb threat on December 9. The Counter-Terrorism Center (TEK) went there, but they did not find any explosive devices.
At the same time, the Stockholm institute of the British International School had to be evacuated. According to Local.se, the evacuation began at 9:44 am. All the 250 students and teachers were rescued, origo.hu wrote.

Hungarian foreign minister: Press in central Europe ‘freer’ than in west
Budapest, January 11 (MTI) – Recent events have made it clear that the press has greater freedom in central Europe than in western Europe, Hungary’s foreign minister said.
Peter Szijjarto reacted to comments from Swedish Foreign Minister Margot Wallstrom made at a defence conference in Sweden on Sunday in which she referred to Hungary and Poland as countries that have introduced reforms which restrict the freedom of expression.
Szijjarto said in a statement that “certain western politicians … still refuse to acknowledge the obvious”. He said it was “clear that illegal migration raises the threat of terrorism and crime in Europe, but anyone discussing this is not a good democrat”.
Szijjarto told his Swedish counterpart “not to worry” about the state of democracy in Hungary or Poland. “Hungarians made a clear choice in both 2010 and 2014,” Szijjarto said referring to landslide election victories by Fidesz. “Recently the Poles also made a clear choice and everyone must respect their opinion.”
The minister said the European Union can only be strong if its member states are. “The Swedish foreign minister is wrong: it is not Hungary or Poland that make the EU weaker, but rather the member states that make baseless accusations instead of finding a solution to Europe’s historic migrant crisis and the other challenges facing the bloc,” Szijjarto said.

The Swedes expelled the Hungarian girl, still remains?
After the Foreign Ministry, CBA (a Hungarian chain store) also supports Fruzsina Wilhelm in order to the injured girl remain with her aunt in Sweden. The host relative, Agnes Ruff talked in tears about the tilting at windmills for Fruzsina for years. Donations may solve it, origo.hu wrote.
Monday’s discussion about the helping of Fruzsina Wilhelm began with the listing of CBA’s benefits. Director of Communications Attila Fodor reminded the previous aids in the fifth anniversary of the sludge disaster. The discussion seemed an advertisement despite the chain store still supports the victims and the mentally handicapped girl.
CBA collected a significant aid with the Save Life Foundation. Their donation is enough for the 21-year-old girl to stay with her aunt in Sweden. However, the chain stores ask the assistance of the general public as well: people can donate in 140 stores across the country.
The young girl’s mother committed suicide in 2007 and his father could not take care of her, but she could not stay at her relatives in Hajdunanas either.
Finally, she went to her aunt Malmo in 2011. Agnes Ruff decided: they undertake the additional care of the girl and wanted to adopt the her. The struggle with the Swedish immigration office began this time.
According to origo.hu, the aunt said first they had tries family reunification and they had submitted the application 3 years ago but the office had not made a decision so far but they used to close these cases in six months. She also wrote to the Swedish king and Justice Minister, without success.
Fruzsina went to a Malmo special school for 3 years, but the authorities wanted to expel her because lifelong care would cost too much. The only option was for Fruzsina to find a job so she can sustain herself.
Agnes Ruff – based on the support – employs her niece as an employee in their company in Malmo and they can request the right of establishment with the certified employment relationship.
According to Agnes, if they could employ Fruzsina for two year, she would spend 5 years in Sweden, counting her studies. Then she would surely get the residence permit as well – the aunt said. They will book the donations as income, yet it is not clear how.
The Hungarian Foreign Ministry also helped them, Peter Szijjarto discussed with his Swedish counterpart, and the ministry sent several orders the family business to help the employment of Fruzsina.
However, the orders were irregularly, and Agnes Ruff did not want to base on it, because if there are no orders, they have to start the application over.
Origo.hu asked Fruzsina why she does not want to stay in Hungary. The girl said: “I have no family here, I have nobody here.”

Hungary’s Stockholm envoy hands letter of protest to foreign minister
Budapest, September 25 (MTI) – Hungary’s ambassador to Sweden on Friday handed a letter of protest to the country’s foreign minister, complaining about “crude slander” made by the migration minister in connection with Hungarian migrant policy.
The Hungarian foreign ministry said in a statement that the minister in question alleged that Hungarian police had used tear gas against asylum seekers who were women and children.
The ministry said that the facts are that aggressive migrants had bombarded police with chunks of concrete for hours on end, and 14 officers had been injured. Action taken had been purely to quell the assault, the statement added.
For this reason Hungary’s foreign minister, Péter Szijjártó, instructed the Stockholm ambassador to hand over the note of protest, the statement said.
Defence Minister: software error is suspected to have caused Gripen crash
Based on the details revealed so far, it is likely that a software error caused the Gripen fighter crash on Wednesday last week, Csaba Hende, the Hungarian defence minister, told daily newspaper Napi Gazdaság, hvg.hu reported.

Video of the forced landing of Gripen
Earlier on 10 June, a Hungarian Air Force Saab Gripen crashed at Kecskemet Air Base after the aircraft’s nose gear failed to retract properly following take off. The experienced pilot, Sándor Kádár, claimed that he was unable to withdraw the front landing gear despite repeated attempts, therefore he decided to eject as the aircraft became uncontrollable while landing.
Referring to the accident, Csaba Hende explained that “based on the details which have emerged so far, it can be concluded that a software error caused the incident,” and that “Sweden’s air force had experienced a similar problem involving a Gripen.” The rest of the Gripens belonging to Hungary’s air force continue to be in a state of full readiness, he added.
During the ninety minutes that the fighter was aloft, the Kecskemét Air Base contacted both the Hungarian and the Swedish technical specialists, and informed Prime Minister Viktor Orbán about the facts.
Talking about next year’s military budget in a separate interview with Magyar Hírlap, the defence minister said that Hungary’s defence budget would grow by 48 billion forints (EUR 154 million), and though the annual salary increment was going to be subtracted from this budget, a considerable fund would be provided for the development of military infrastructure as well, he added.

10 countries where Hungarians stick together- Part 1
Hungarians say Hungarians don’t stick together abroad. However, velvet.hu collected several letters sent by Hungarians from abroad to show there are positive examples as well.
Austria
“It was strange to read about Hungarians of the article who had immediately given up making contacts with other Hungarians after some negative experiences. I myself have been living in Salzburg for 5 years, but earlier, I had spent 2 years in Vienna and one in Munich.
During my life in Vienna, I had gone skating with Hungarian students, since many of them had attended the Music Academy, they had also invited me for their concerts. I played football with Hungarians once a week. Of course with Austrians too, in the company team. I sat with 3 Hungarian colleagues in the office, we always helped each other, the first time I stayed at one of my colleague as long as I couldn’t find an apartment.
I have Hungarian colleagues in Salzburg, we are on good terms and help each other. If you need to carry furniture, tow a car, return this and that home, we can always count on each other. From time to time we drink together a beer, eat a pizza or go hiking etc. Of course, we pay attention not to separate from the Austrian colleagues, we don’t exclude them with the language, we don’t go to eat together, and everyone goes with his/her Austrian colleagues. On Sunday, there was Tankcsapda concert in the town, I went to there with three Hungarians and an Austrian, but there he was the “foreigner”.
It is essential you can make friends with foreigners in a foreign country, because locals have their own network of connections, they don’t need new friends. Why should I exclude Hungarians? There is a Facebook group for Hungarians living in the province, there are around 2500 people in it, if your computer breaks down or you need Austrian license plate for your car, there is always someone who can help you. In a small team, we celebrated March 15. Of course, you can also womanize in this case.
There are trolls among so many people, as well as at home. If someone hostile is or “want to rummage in my pocket”, I obviously won’t make friends with him/her. Of course, I don’t limit myself only for Hungarian people, I went skiing with a Ukrainian and a Spanish guy two weeks ago. I go football with more Austrian companies and I play ice hockey with the company team.”
Germany
“I’ve been living in Bavaria for almost three years and I work with hundreds of Hungarians at Munich Airport. We came here from very different life situations and almost all of us started from bottom. It means package loading at most of us. The very hard years of the beginning brought together many Hungarians, acquaintances, friendships formed. We are held in high esteem at the airport because we are hard-working and reliable. Many of us started as borrowed workers and lived in workers’ hostel, which brought us together. We also have an association founded by a former colleague worked at the airport. I am the author of the MUC-airport blog, which due to many Hungarians could get a job. There is a great Hungarian team here, for those Hungary doesn’t need to be ashamed of.”
Switzerland
I lived in Bern, Switzerland for 13 years, I raised 3 children with a husband from a third country, I was a university student. It was between about 1984 and 1997. That was the most beautiful time of my life in terms of the Hungarians, there was a heart-warming, great Hungarian community. Demanding cultural performances, scouting, Hungarian Mass, these gave me the spiritual home. The atmosphere there and then was thanks to some enthusiastic, charismatic people’s work, who lived there such a way they could not go home. Hungarians were important for them, 56 refugees were also living then.
Heart-warming celebration of national holidays, we often got together privately, the atmosphere was friendly, loving and cheerful. I have never spoken with my children in German, they learned that on the streets, pre-school, school, but the local community was a great help to keep their Hungarian identity. Not all of the Hungarians there were sympathetic for me just because they were Hungarians, but I found friends as well. Sometimes there something in the life of the community reminiscent of a soap opera: marriages, divorces, stories…but everyone does his own level. Some of the friendships has been lasting, some of them have been updated after a longer break.
The solidarity which I experienced there has been missing in my life since then, I am homesick for Bern from Hungary. I also go back for 4-5 days every year, but it is not the same. Unfortunately, the local Hungarian community waned, aged, many of them died. But there is scouting, even a Hungarian school has created, there is Hungarian Mass despite the Swiss state doesn’t support it financially. The Hungarians of Bern and Basel finance a priest coming from Transylvania. There are programs, lectures; some Hungarian families have been keeping the local Hungarian traditions in the third generation. It is sad, touching, admirable. I don’t know what life was in other cities then, but I lived through that then and there, and have feeding from it spiritually.”
Spain (Mallorca)
“(…)I’m in the fortunate position that I experienced more solidarity. And it is also important for integration. And when I saw that the writing in the box is about Mallorca, I smiled because I also got friends there with who I still keep in touch.
And so thinking back, it is not really evolved in other countries. I lived 6 months in Dominica, 6 month in Austria, 1.5 years in the Canary Islands (Fuerteventura), years in Mallorca and I’ve been living in Austria since March 1. I was a Hungarian evening in Mallorca what many people attended, I got friends from Mallorca, but we only speak by phone, Skype, because they’re not near. There are in Switzerland, Tyrol, Germany, and there are people who left in Mallorca. Then it occurred to me that it contributed in the beginning that I spoke the language of the country and it is not difficult for me to help, so they used me sometimes, but it eventually turns out.
Of course, I had the pleasure for those Hungarians who turn away when they hear a Hungarian word. They are the ones who I wouldn’t like to meet either in home or abroad…We spent a beautiful 6 years in Mallorca which is partly due to the nice Hungarians living there. So I think if someone is bad-tempered, he/she remains that in Hungary and abroad too.
Sweden
“I recommend you to contact the SMOSZ, the National Federation of Hungarians in Sweden which has about 5000 members, or SOMIT, the Hungarian Youth Society of Sweden which has hundreds of members. And you can also write about what it is like when local Hungarians stick together, partying together, going to the theater, doing charity work pass on the Hungarian language to the next generation.
My story began when I had moved to my Swedish boyfriend to Stockholm. It was important to quickly learn the language, there was company through my boyfriend, so I didn’t have the need to meet Hungarians. I thought that just because we spoke the same language, it is not enough to be on good terms with someone.
The change was when I broke up with my boyfriend 2 years ago and I stood there without acquaintances. I started to enter Facebook groups and once I was invited to a film club. It turned into that I meet Hungarians the most.
Here, in Sweden, there are all kinds of people who were mentioned in the article. Some use the other, there is Hungarian nationalism, envy. But there are helpful, nice and valuable people too, and fortunately I know these people.
The cultural life is pretty busy, there is playhouse in place called Hungarian House every two weeks. There are commemorations, lectures, dance houses and summer camps. The embassy also organizes programs and very high quality performances. I also heard about Hungarian choir and reading circle. Someone holds talking evening every first Friday of the month, for many years. There also are film clubs. And that’s just what I know.”

Hungary asks Sweden to reconsider immigration request of mentally impaired woman
Riga, March 6 (MTI) – Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto has asked his Swedish counterpart for a “humanitarian solution” to the case of Hungarian Fruzsina Wilhelm, who is facing deportation from Sweden.
During a meeting in Riga on Friday, Szijjarto asked Margot Wallstrom to consider a solution through which Wilhelm could stay with her aunt in Sweden.
Hungary is ready to engage in talks regarding the financial, technical or legal aspects of this case, Szijjarto said. Wallstrom replied that she had no real influence on the case but promised that she would monitor the developments.
Online news portal index.hu reported on Tuesday that the 20-year-old woman with a mental disability was an orphan who lived with her aunt in Malmo for the past two years. The Swedish immigration office wants to send her back to Hungary because they consider it too big a burden on the country to pay for her living costs. Wilhelm’s request for a residence permit was turned down in 2014 and she was asked to present her return flight ticket at the office. She currently receives disability allowance of 1,550 Swedish crowns a month (EUR 168).

Hungarians Deserve Greater Respect from Sweden’s Europe Minister, Says Szijjártó
(MTI) – Hungary and Hungarians deserve greater respect from the Swedish European affairs minister, the state secretary for foreign and trade affairs, Péter Szijjártó, said on Thursday, after reports that Birgitta Ohlsson had criticised Viktor Orbán, the premier.
Ohlsson wrote in Sweden’s Aftonbladet daily that “Orban’s lot are looking to Russia for their political model, and instead of a liberal democracy it treats the illiberal state and labour-based society as its values while handling defenders of rights and the civil sector as obstacles….”
In a statement, Szijjártó said it was “unacceptable” that the minister had made up “pure lies” about “Hungary and the Hungarian people”. He said that European citizens had the right to expect European politicians to carry out their duties in line with European values.
Ohlsson grossly slandered Hungary and the Hungarian people, and ignored a basic European value, namely respect for facts, he added.
In a recent speech, Orbán slammed the model of the liberal western welfare state, saying that Hungary, in this respect, would follow an illiberal approach.
