Sopron is among the 30 most beautiful towns in Europe – VIDEO
According to telegraph.co.uk, the Japanese tourist board has revealed which they think are the prettiest towns in Europe – and we are thrilled to report that the beautiful Hungarian city of Sopron is part of the list! The list includes scenic hilltop communes, coastal fishing villages and more from towns all around Europe.
The agents were presented with the challenge to pick the 30 best by the Japanese Association of Travel Agents (JATA), which wants to promote travel to attractive little places in Europe.
They write about Sopron that it is the site of a diplomatic picnic that helped to end communism in Eastern Europe in 1989 and that Sopron is also home to more than 300 dentists. Naturally, the city has much more faces and interesting aspects.
As sopron.hu writes, the city is situated near the western borders of Hungary, at the foot of the Alps. It is one of the oldest jewelboxes of the country. Sopron merges past and present. It creates a bridge between Hungary and its western neighbours, opening a gate for foreign guests visiting Hungary, as it is symbolized by the coat of arms of the city.
The inhabitants of the city are famed for their hospitality and their loyalty to their hometown. This is also symbolized by the ‘Gate of Faith’, which can be found on the southern side of the Firewatch Tower. The symbol of the city was made in memory of the referendum of 1921.
The curative and refreshing air of the natural environment, the hiking routes of the wooded hillsides, the view towers, the mountain springs, and the proximity of Lake Fertő make Sopron one of the most beautiful and most pleasant holiday resorts of Hungary. The Löverek, the hilly area south of the city is the most fascinating and most distinguished area of the city. It offers calm forests with spruces, oaks and chestnuts, lilies of the valley and cyclamens, hiking paths and lookout towers.
The city offers something to everybody, but probably the Telekom VOLT Festival attracts most of the tourist. This summer it is going to be held between the 29th of June and the 2nd of July. Make sure to keep an eye on the list of performers!

Sziget, VOLT win two European Festival Awards
Budapest, January 14 (MTI) – Hungary’s Sziget and VOLT music festivals have won two of the European Festival Awards for 2015.
Sziget, the week-long festival held on a Danube Island in Budapest, has won an award for Best Festival Line-Up and VOLT, a major music event hosted by Sopron, in north-western Hungary, won the prize for Best Medium-Sized Festival, the press chief for Sziget told MTI on Thursday.
The awards were presented at a formal gala in Groningen in The Netherlands on Wednesday evening, Viktoria Veto said in a statement.
Sziget fetched the European Festival Award for Best Major Festival first in 2011 and again in 2014, the statement said.
The Sziget festival last August attracted a record number of over 430,000 people. Its line-up included on the main stage Robbie Williams, Ellie Goulding, Avicii, Kasabian, Limp Bizkit, Foals, Marina and the Diamonds, Gogol Bordello, Maccabees and Martin Garrix, among others. The focus on the world music stage were Gypsy music and Roma culture from India. The festival also offered several productions at its classical music stage.
The Volt Festival in mid-summer drew a record crowd of 123,000 people in 2015. It offered 200 acts featuring Motorhead, the Parov Stelar Band, David Guetta, Wellhello, Akos, John Newman and Fatboy Slim, among others.
The European Festival Awards were initiated in 2010 by the European festival association Yourope and the festival website Virtual Festivals Europe and are presented each year.

Big concerts are coming in 2016 as well
2016 concert calendar is taking shape, although we are still very much at the beginning. Balaton Sound and Sziget Festival have not announced performers so far, but itthon.blog.hu has already found 5 concerts worth waiting for in the next year.
Iron Maiden
They were in Hungary in 2014 the last time, and it has been recently announced that they would come again to the Volt Festival 2016. The legendary English metal band inserted the Hungarian performance into the world tour of its new album called The Book of Souls, but since they rarely get here, singer Bruce Dickinson promised they would play well-known classic Maiden tracks as well.
The Cure
After 8 years, The Cure starts a tour again in 2016. The major alternative rock band visited Hungary several times, but their 2016 concert will definitely be an exciting event, whether it will be a best of concert, or a premiere of their new album which has been promised by the band’s founder-songwriter Robert Smith for a long time. The supporting band will be The Twilight Sad, and the venue the Budapest Arena, itthon.blog.hu wrote.
Lara Fabian
The Canadian Lara Fabian (she is of Italian-Belgian descent, but she will sing in English and French in Hungary), who sings in the footsteps of Celine Dion and Sarah Brightman, will perform in the Budapest Arena. Tens of thousands visit her concerts for her powerful, magical voice. She sings, in addition to her own songs, the hits of Edit Piaf, Barbra Streisand and Charles Aznavour. Her popularity is increasing in Hungary, too, but if you have not heard about her, here is her biggest hit:
Ennio Morricone
The uncrowded king of soundtracks will give a concert in the Budapest Arena on January 17. The master summarizes the 60 years of his career as a composer and conductor, so his most famous soundtracks will definitely be heard, and allegedly he will perform novelties and surprises as well. Morricone has worked with the biggest names from Sergio Leone to Quentin Tarantino, but he also wrote music for Bud Spencer films, moreover, he composed for Fatelessness in 2005.
Ignite
The Californian punk-rock band will begin the year with a new album, and they will also present it in Barba Negra Track in Budapest. The singer has Hungarian ancestors, so you can hear Hungarian-related things in their songs repeatedly, and you should not even be surprised if he starts singing a song in Hungarian.
