Teachers’ union to Hungarian government: give us back our right to strike!
Teachers’ union PSZ has called on the government and parliament to restore education workers’ right to strike and “put an end to the intimidation of teachers”.
In a statement approved by its congress in Hajdúszoboszló, in eastern Hungary, this weekend, PSZ repeated its remand that the government should immediately raise wages in the sector and restore the status of vocational training as part of public education.
The union stressed the need to set up a separate ministry of education, and called on Prime Minister Viktor Orbán to appoint a commissioner who has expertise in all areas of education to be a partner in talks on structural changes, managing the shortage of teachers, modernising the education system, and a review of the national curriculum.
Further demands include decentralisation, guaranteeing the professional autonomy of schools and teachers, a free choice of textbooks and restoring the rights of headmasters. The union will not let the Hungarian government sacrifice the next generation, the congress concluded.

Education opens Windows of OPPORTUNITIES.
The Educators across the broad areas of Education in Hungary, you KNOW – the PAY increase date, not before 2025 from the Government, that’s if Hungary, we ever receive European Union Funding again.
Educators know – the fabrication of truth, excuses and blame – used by this present Government, through there ABSOLUTE neglect to INVEST in Education.
Educators know that European Union Funding has continuously been used for “other” projects sporting and football Arenas as examples, and not Invested into Education.
Educators KNOW this “Dictatorial” Government want to RUN and Control EDUCATION in Hungary, like they do the Media and the Judiciary.
Democracy – the rights of people to orderly object to a governments decision or Policy – by use of marches and strike actions – part of the CORE of a Democratic Society.
Educators – know and understand in Hungary – they EMBRACE that Democracy is DIALOGUE.
Teachers work 10 months only. Surely, during the summer they should be able to iron out difficulties instead of depriving the students. Everyone is suffering from high inflation, not only the teachers. If teachers are given a large raise, it will raise the inflation index and will make everyone else suffer more, including pensioners, nurses, drivers, factory workers, farmers. No one sector should be given special privileges.
Got a real thing about teachers haven’t you mariavontheresa. Unhappy school days was it.
Teachers use to deserve a good salary and respect. There was a time when teachers did a good job, children graduating earned their diploma. In the past, teachers actually liked their jobs and the pupils. Then came the union. The question is are teachers’ salaries lower than average salary of people in Hungary with a degree? Is there job security: One thing to remember is that the teachers only work 10 months. Teachers also received a large salary increase not that long ago. Yes, I and all parents should resent teachers’ brainwashing children. Children should not be involved in a dispute between employer and employee. Large protestations can get violent, no child’ life should be risked. Teachers have a choice, if they do not like the job or conditions quit and find something else.
I hate to reveal personal data, I had wonderful Nuns as teachers. These wonderful Nuns ensured that all student learned the curriculum. The Nuns were successful because they liked their profession and the students.
