The Hungarian government would further extend the state of emergency

The Hungarian government wants to extend the state of emergency due to the Russian-Ukrainian war. This would allow Fidesz to rule Hungary by decree for another 180 days.
The government is once again proposing to parliament to extend the state of emergency over the Russian-Ukrainian war. This requires a two-thirds majority of MPs.
The law was last extended on 1 November, index.hu reports.
“The purpose of the proposal is that Parliament, on the basis of Article 51(3) of the Fundamental Law, once again authorises the Government to extend the state of emergency for a further 180 days. The armed conflict and humanitarian disaster in Ukraine and their consequences for Hungary, especially in the areas of asylum, economy and energy, have not changed in the recent period, and, therefore the maintenance of the special legal order is justified,” the government’s official website reads.
On 1 November, a constitutional amendment came into force, replacing the previous six special legal orders with three. These are martial law, state of emergency and state of emergency.
Viktor OrbĂ¡n had said earlier that this would allow the government to react immediately. On the contrary, the opposition believes that this further reduces the importance of the parliament, 444.hu reports.
Gergely GulyĂ¡s said in 2020 that “the political left accuses us in vain that the special legal order would last forever, it will end earlier than in most European countries”.
