Two brand new Hungarikums announced!
Hungarikums are things and phenomenons that are unique to Hungary, therefore representing a great value for Hungarians. Hungarikums include pálinka, Zsolnay porcelain, Matyó folk art, the life work of Ferenc Puskás, Goulash soup and so on. Now, two new Hungarikums have been announced. The 200-year-old Anna Ball in Balatonfüred and teqball, the sport promoted by György Gattyán, have also become Hungarikums, announced Minister of Agriculture István Nagy at a press conference following the meeting of the Hungaricum Committee on Tuesday. This brings the number of values included in the collection of Hungaricums to 85, MTI reports.

István Nagy pointed out that the Hungarikum Committee, which was established in 2012 by the Act on Hungarian National Values and Hungarikums, met for the first time in the current government term and for the thirty-third time in total. The committee’s task is to examine whether the values put forward have the qualities that would make them representative of Hungary and Hungarian identity, Telex writes.
According to the Agriculture Minister, hungarikums and values already included or nominated in the value catalogue are treasures “because they express Hungarian identity, they tell a story about Hungarians without words”. Last year, for example, the hooped whip, the national shrine of Máriapócs and the Freedom of Religion Act of 1568 were declared Hungarikums.
