Low-cost carrier Wizz Air has celebrated two decades of operations in Romania, where it has grown into one of the country’s leading airlines. The carrier now operates 83 routes from 14 Romanian airports, connecting passengers to 27 countries, company representatives announced at an event held on Wednesday in Târgu Mureș.

The celebration took place at Transilvania International Airport, where Wizz Air launched its first Romanian flight on 14 July 2006. That inaugural service connected Târgu Mureș with Budapest, marking the airline’s entry into the Romanian market.

Today, passengers travelling from Târgu Mureș can fly directly to 10 destinations across eight countries, while Wizz Air also bases an Airbus A320neo aircraft at the airport.

Romania becomes one of Wizz Air’s key markets

Speaking at the event, Ian Malin, Wizz Air’s Executive Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer, said Romania has become one of the European Union’s most mobile countries, with Wizz Air now serving as the country’s leading airline.

He noted that the Wizz Air Group currently operates a fleet of more than 270 aircraft, largely made up of modern Airbus A321neo jets.

According to Malin, regional airports across Romania are now connected with cities throughout Europe, making air travel an everyday reality for millions of people. He added that the airline intends to further strengthen its partnership with Romanian airports in the years ahead.

Airport plans further expansion

Attila Csibi, Vice President of the Mureș County Council, which operates Târgu Mureș Airport, said that the continued development of the airport remains a top priority.

Airport Director András Peti highlighted the strategic importance of the airport and outlined recent infrastructure investments. He said the airport aims to continue improving its facilities, enhance passenger services and attract additional routes in the future.
