Wizz Air is expanding its presence in Romania once again, announcing a new operational base at Brașov-Ghimbav International Airport from December 2026. The move will bring four new routes to the Transylvanian city and expand Wizz Air’s Brașov network to 15 destinations across seven countries.
The airline’s expansion comes despite a challenging financial period, with Wizz Air recently reporting a significant loss for the first quarter of its current financial year.
Wizz Air to base an aircraft in Brașov
From December, Brașov-Ghimbav International Airport will become home to one Airbus A321neo operated by Wizz Air, making Brașov (Brassó) the airline’s 10th operational base in Romania, Maszol.ro writes based on the report of economica.net. The new base will support four new routes connecting Brașov with:
- Chișinău, Moldova
- Barcelona, Spain
- Madrid, Spain
- Karlsruhe/Baden-Baden, Germany
Once the expansion is complete, passengers flying from Brașov will be able to reach 15 cities in seven countries with Wizz Air. The new routes are expected to significantly strengthen the airport’s international connectivity, particularly for travellers in southern Transylvania.
800,000 passengers have already flown with Wizz Air from Brașov
Wizz Air has operated from Brașov since August 2023. According to data from the local county council, its services have carried around 800,000 passengers from the airport so far. The airline says its continued presence demonstrates its long-term commitment to the region.
“Over the past three years, through our uninterrupted operations at Brașov Airport, we have demonstrated our long-term commitment to the region,” said András Radó, Wizz Air’s communications director.
He also described Romania as a key market for the airline. The new Brașov base comes just nine months after Wizz Air opened another base in Transylvania, at Târgu Mureș.
Romania a key market for Wizz Air
Wizz Air has been operating in Romania since 2006 and has established itself as the country’s leading low-cost airline. The carrier currently employs around 1,900 people in Romania and connects 14 Romanian cities with 83 destinations across 26 countries, operating a total of around 230 routes.
The expansion in Brașov therefore represents another significant step in the airline’s Romanian network, particularly as demand for international travel from regional airports continues to grow.

Wizz Air reports nearly EUR 200 million quarterly loss
The expansion comes at an interesting time for the airline financially. Wizz Air recently reported a EUR 198 million loss for the three months ending in June. This compares with a EUR 38.4 million profit recorded during the same period a year earlier.
Despite the substantial loss, the airline’s revenue increased by 5.5% year-on-year to EUR 1.51 billion, although this was slightly below analysts’ expectations of EUR 1.54 billion. The Brașov expansion nevertheless signals that Wizz Air continues to see considerable growth potential in Romania.
With a new aircraft based locally and four additional international destinations on the way, Brașov is set to become an increasingly important part of Wizz Air’s Romanian network from the end of this year.
