The Dutch police found the body of a 37-years-old Hungarian woman who had been missing since February 2021 in a car’s rooftop cargo carrier dumped into a river.

According to NLTimes, a passer-by spotted the suspicious roof box in the Oaranjekanaal on 7 February and immediately reported it to the police.

When the police arrived for investigation, they found the dead body of a 37-year-old Hungarian woman in the box.

The investigators concluded that the perpetrator must have dumped the box into the canal two days prior to the passer-by spotting the out of place object, on 5 February.

Telegraf.nl wrote last week, that divers went into the canal to look for possible clues and the police also posted some images of the GTI Sport 500 roof box that the body was found in, in hopes of getting more tips from witnesses.

According to Origo, an eyewitness came forward and told the police that on the night of 5 February, he or she saw the headlights of a vehicle near the canal and also remembered that, possibly, the driver of the vehicle dumped a large suitcase-like object into the water not far from one of the local bridges.

Authorities said that the 37-year-old Hungarian woman had been reported missing last February.

Telex reports that the father of the victim told Dagblad van het Noorden, a Dutch daily news outlet, that he first turned to the police in 2020 and now he had been told that his daughter was possibly murdered.

Authorities have not yet disclosed the exact cause of death, but they suspect that the woman had been deceased for a while before the perpetrator tried to dispose of the body. According to NLTimes, the woman could have been killed a month ago.

The Dutch police have placed the 37-year-old woman’s ex-husband, a 52-year-old dental technician from Assen in custody for suspicion of involvement in the death of the Hungarian victim.

The couple had two children, but they were taken from them by the local child protection service back in 2019, Origo wrote.

Based on Dagblad van het Noorden’s article, one of her former friends said that the 37-year-old Hungarian victim was working as a prostitute and may have even been involved in drug trafficking.
