A 33-year-old man was seriously injured after being stabbed several times in the thigh during a confrontation on a Budapest tram on Wednesday morning. Police arrested the suspected attacker within minutes.
Passenger stabbed during confrontation
The incident happened at around 9:50 AM on Wednesday on tram 4, near the Wesselényi Street/Erzsébet Boulevard stop, according to the Budapest Police Headquarters. Police said an 18-year-old man stabbed a 33-year-old passenger several times in the inner thigh before getting off the tram.
According to HVG that shared information from the National Ambulance Service, the injured man suffered a serious thigh injury and was taken to hospital. The driver and several passengers reportedly rushed to help the injured man and attempted to provide assistance until paramedics arrived.
The suspected attacker did not remain at the scene for long. Officers from the Rapid Response Police arrested him within minutes in Budapest’s District 8 and took him to the District 7 police station, where he is being questioned.

Tram services briefly disrupted
The incident also temporarily disrupted public transport along one of Budapest’s busiest tram routes. Due to police action, replacement buses operated between Blaha Lujza Square and Oktogon, replacing trams 4 and 6 for a short period.
According to BKK Info, the disruption began shortly before 10 AM, while normal tram services were restored at around 10:50 AM. Trams 4 and 6 have since resumed running along their full routes. Police have not disclosed further details about the circumstances that led to the confrontation or the suspected motive.
