Programme guide containing the best Hungarian celebrations recommended for Pentecost
The celebration of Pentecost marks the end of spring and the beginning of summer to which religious and folk traditions are both attached. Various celebrations and festivals are organised all around the country on this occasion, and in this article, with the help of Utisugo.hu, we have made a compilation about the best programmes to choose from. If you have not made up your mind yet about what to do during the long weekend, then you might gain some ideas for family programmes here.
Szigliget
A two-day-long festival (20-21 May) is organised on the occasion of Pentecost in the castle of Szigliget where visitors can enjoy diverse programmes from the gun and weapon shows through contemporary music and dance performances to a puppet show. With the help of experts, anyone can try out traditional Hungarian weapons once used in battles. Furthermore, kids can also participate in a castle challenge composed of a number of trials, and if all of them are accomplished, then they can become the official pages of the castle of Szigliget for one weekend. 🙂
Hollókó
Hollókő is widely-known as the Hungarian settlement where folk traditions are deeply rooted in the everyday life of its inhabitants. This is also the case at Pentecost when long-existing traditions come alive in the Old Village on 21 May.
Everyone can have a great time and choose from a wide variety of programmes including, for instance, a folkplayhouse, blessing division and folkdance performances in which enthusiastic volunteers can also participate.
Besides the arts and crafts fair and the gastronomical fair, visitors should not miss either the opportunity to win the title of the Pentecost King of Hollókő. If you believe that you can use your strength and mental skills to accomplish different tasks, then you should absolutely try your luck there.
Pannonhalma
Could there be any other programmes better in Pannonhalma for the lovers of culinary pleasures than tasting the best wines of the region? This is what visitors can do between 19-21 May by visiting the seven cellars of the Pannonhalma wine region open on this occasion.
The venues of the programmes are within easy reach since buses run in every two hours up to the hill, reports Programturizmus.hu.
However, it is important to keep in mind that registration is obligatory and has to be done in advance since it helps the organisers better arrange the transportation of visitors.
Badacsonytomaj
The marriage proposal festival organised in Badacsonytomaj has become an annual event by now. If you really look for something special and unique, or in fact, you want to propose to the woman of your life at the famous Rózsakő (Rose Stone), then this event on 20 May is absolutely the best choice.
This festival is not only about marriage proposals, but about great wines and family programmes as well, but undoubtedly, proposals are the icings on the cake.
The venue is perfect for a family celebration after you have obtained the desired YES, and you can even clink glasses while admiring the magnificent panorama unfolding before your eyes.
Vajdahunyad Castle, Budapest
Between 19-21 May, the festival called MIÉNK A VÁR! (The castle is ours!) is organised in Budapest, in the Museum and Library of Hungarian Agriculture at the Vajdahunyad castle. Visitors can get acquainted with a large number of Hungarian castles and get to know more about the cultural and historical traditions connected to them.
Castle presentations, dance shows and a scientific conference are organised during the long weekend, but visitors can also see temporary and permanent exhibitions and participate in guided tours in the castle, reports Mezogazdasagimuzeum.hu. If you plan to spend Pentecost in the capital, do not miss the opportunity to visit this castle for some colourful programmes.
Buda Castle
Another programme for those staying in Budapest during the long weekend is organised on the splendid terraces of the Buda castle where visitors can admire the unique attraction of the blossoming Tree of Life or see the ritual of the Pentecost Queen procession. Similarly to Hollókő, the Pentecost King is getting elected in Buda Castle as well. On the stage, folk music performances, folk dance and children programmes are organised, so everyone can find what suits to his taste.
Szentendre
The Open Air Museum of Szentendre also joins the Pentecost celebrations with the Pentecost Heritage Festival the major aim of which is tradition-preservation.
If you would like to be familiar with bluepaint techniques and know what the molnárkalács is and how it is made, then visit the Open Air Museum beween 20-21 May.
During the festival, you can admire the unique Kalocsa dances, listen to bagpipes musical performances, have a firsthand view of the rightly famous Mohács Busójárás dances or take part in a typical wedding ceremony organised according to the traditions of Slovenians living in the Rába river region. In fact, it is hardly possible to enumerate all of the programmes that the Open Air Museum organises at Pentecost, but those collected here might put you in the mood for visiting this place during the weekend for some fun. 🙂
