German carmaker BMW will probably add shifts at its new factory in Hungary to meet “enormous demand”, the head of BMW Group Plant Debrecen said at an international press conference on Tuesday.

Hans-Peter Kemser said the plant was operating with two shifts at present, turning out 30 cars an hour. He added that orders for over 50,000 of the fully-electric BMW iX3 model, which the plant manufactures, had been placed in just six months, MTI wrote.

The BMW iX3 is the first Neue Klasse model to go into serial production. BMW plans to roll out around 40 more models in future, to be produced around the world.

BMW opened its more than EUR 2bn plant in Debrecen in the autumn of 2025. Around 150,000 EVs will roll off the line there annually.

The plant in Debrecen is the first of five such BMW manufacturing bases around the world where batteries will be assembled locally, shortening supply chains.

Kemser highlighted BMW Group Plant Debrecen’s commitment to its employees, to training and to long-term partnerships, pointing to a remote faculty of the University of Debrecen that operates at the base.
