Protesters Demand Dismissal of Tax Chiefs
Budapest, November 9 (MTI) – A large crowd of protesters gathered in front of tax authority NAV headquarters in Budapest’s District 7 on Sunday evening, demanding the removal of NAV leaders, including tax chief Ildiko Vida, who was recently banned from the US on corruption charges.

Gabor Vago, a former deputy of the green LMP party, referred to the United States’ banning senior Hungarian officials from the country as the greatest scandal of the past decade and demanded that the European Union should launch an investigation.
The crowd then left the NAV headquarters to walk to the economy ministry in Jozsef nador Square.
Addressing the crowd which he estimated at over 10,000, Vago said that the government had been reluctant to investigate reports of major tax fraud and repeatedly called on leaders of the tax authority to step down. Unless they do so, another protest will be held on November 17 both in Budapest and in front of local NAV offices in the provinces, he said.
Zoltan Bekesi, another speaker, accused the government of building a “state-mafia” and called on participants to take action or else the country may become a “dunghill”.
Former NAV officer Andras Horvath called on the authorities to launch an investigation into the alleged fraud cases rather than looking to the US for evidence. “What we need is a new rule of law to suppress corruption,” he insisted.
At the end of the demonstration, participants observed a minute of silence in memory of recently deceased opposition activist Milan Rozsa and sang the national anthem.
