Brutal bomb attack in downtown Budapest, officers injured: VIDEO never seen before
RTL Klub, a Hungarian commercial TV channel, shared an exclusive video about one of the biggest blasts in Budapest. The explosion nearly killed two Hungarian police officers, and a 23-year-old man was convicted for more than 30 years in prison. However, the recording may result in a retrial.
According to rtl.hu, two police officers were injured in a September 2016 bomb attack in Budapest’s downtown. Years have passed, but they could not fully recover. We wrote about the shrapnel bomb attack HERE. The remotely controlled explosive device went off on the corner of Király Street and the Great Promenade, in Budapest’s 6th district. Passers-by started to run. Then, a huge smoke cloud emerged to cover the nearby streets. Two police officers were seriously injured, and some ran to help them.
Authorities started to search for a man acting strangely before the explosion in a nearby shop. They shared one video showing him in a fishing cap. After a month-long manhunt, police caught a 23-year-old man who ordered bomb particles on the internet six months earlier. Furthermore, his DNA was found at the scene. In 2019, the court convicted him to a life sentence, meaning at least 30 years imprisoned.
Father believes authorities framed his son
He appealed to the Constitutional Court, but his plea is still pending. However, his lawyer asked for a retrial thanks to another footage that emerged recently and showed the events from a different angle. According to the lawyer, the video shows some people acting strangely before and after the explosion. Moreover, authorities found the DNA of his defendants in only a 26-metre-long and 1-metre-wide area, which is strange, the lawyer believes. István Keviczky says it seems one of the bystanders reported about the explosion after the bomb went off. Furthermore, he found another man running away from a gateway strangely.
The father of the convicted man believes authorities intentionally put his son’s DNA on the scene. He thinks his son was convicted for using fiction and half-truths. For example, his height is 185 cm, but authorities searched for somebody only 170 cm tall. The court will decide about a retrial in months, rtl.hu wrote. Below, you may check out the new video.
