Budapest police have asked for help from the public in locating an object, thought to be a second world war explosive device, that resurfaced in the Danube but disappeared before officers arrived.

A man reported finding a rusted object resembling a shell in the Danube in Budapest’s 22nd district on Monday, during historically low water levels which had revealed several objects in the riverbed. However, police only found the empty site upon arrival, the statement of the city’s police headquarters said.
Based on photographs taken by the finder, officials cannot rule out that the device is a second world war artillery grenade, the statement said.
Authorities warned the public against moving, disassembling or transporting the object. Even decades-old devices embedded in soil or water can remain dangerous and should only be handled by bomb disposal experts, the statement said.
The police have launched an investigation on suspicion of misuse of explosives, the statement added.
