What to eat at Hungarian Christmas markets

No visit to a Hungarian Christmas market would be complete without trying some traditional seasonal food and drinks. Popular choices include kürtőskalács, also known as chimney cake, a sweet pastry baked over an open flame and coated with sugar, cinnamon or other toppings.

Visitors can also find lángos, a deep-fried dough traditionally served with garlic, sour cream and cheese, as well as grilled sausages, hearty hot meals and a variety of sweet treats.

For drinks, mulled wine (forralt bor) is a festive favourite, while hot chocolate and other warm beverages are popular among families and visitors who prefer non-alcoholic options.

Planning your visit: What should you know?

Most of Hungary’s major Christmas markets are free to enter, although some attractions and activities may require separate tickets. Opening hours can also vary on public holidays, particularly on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

If you are visiting Budapest, the two main markets are within walking distance of each other, making it easy to explore both in one evening. Public transport is generally the most convenient way to reach the city centre, especially during the busy festive period.

For trips outside the capital, it is worth checking the local organisers’ websites before travelling, as additional performances and programme details may be announced closer to the opening dates.

With Budapest’s major markets opening on 13 November and several regional cities following later in the month, Hungary’s 2026 Christmas market season is just around the corner.
