Hungary’s long spell of hot, settled weather is set to end on Monday as a cold front moves into the Carpathian Basin, bringing showers, thunderstorms, strong winds and cooler temperatures.

According to HungaroMet, atmospheric activity has already increased to the north and west of Hungary. The associated precipitation zone reached the Alps on Sunday, with showers and thunderstorms developing in several areas. Cooler air masses of oceanic origin are following the system and will soon reach Hungary.

Sunday remains hot

Sunday will remain mostly sunny and hot, with afternoon temperatures of 33–36°C. Clouds will gradually increase from the north-west later in the day, with showers and thunderstorms possible near the border.

The southerly wind will strengthen in many areas before easing during the evening. Overnight temperatures are expected to remain between 15 and 22°C.

Storms arrive in Hungary on Monday

The cold front will move across Hungary on Monday, bringing increasing cloud cover and showers and thunderstorms to more areas. The Great Plain may still enjoy several hours of sunshine.

The wind will turn north-westerly and become fresh to strong, while thunderstorms could bring gale-force gusts locally. Hail and torrential downpours are also possible. Temperatures will range from 27–36°C, with the hottest conditions expected in the south-east.

According to Időkép, some storms could organise into lines. However, the rainfall will be highly uneven, meaning the change is unlikely to end Hungary’s prolonged drought. Locally, more than 15–20 millimetres could fall, but most areas may receive only a few millimetres, while parts of central Hungary could remain dry.

There is better news for the Danube: 50–80 millimetres of rain could fall in parts of Lower and Upper Austria within the river’s catchment, potentially slowing or halting its current decline.

Cooler Tuesday ahead

By Tuesday, cloud cover should decrease across much of Hungary, although showers may linger in the south and east. Strong northerly and north-westerly winds are expected. Morning temperatures will fall to 11–17°C, with afternoon highs of 23–28°C.

The rest of the week should remain partly sunny and unsettled, with temperatures rising again to 28–33°C on Wednesday and 29–34°C on Thursday. Further showers and thunderstorms may develop from Thursday, while another stronger front could arrive around Friday.
