Liverpool FC have officially announced that Hungarian midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai has signed a new long-term contract, committing his future to the Premier League club until 2031.
Reward for remarkable development
The new agreement comes just three years after Szoboszlai joined Liverpool from RB Leipzig in the summer of 2023 on a contract that originally ran until 2028. Since then, the Hungarian international has established himself as one of the club’s most influential players, earning widespread recognition for his performances and becoming a fan favourite.
According to British media reports, negotiations over a new contract have been ongoing for around eight months. The extension is understood to reflect Szoboszlai’s growing importance to Liverpool, both in terms of his salary and his standing within the squad.
Voted player of the season by supporters
The 25-year-old enjoyed a breakthrough campaign last season, when Liverpool supporters voted him the club’s Player of the Season. According to the club’s statement, across three seasons at Anfield, he has made 147 appearances, scoring 28 goals and providing 26 assists. Speaking after signing the new deal, Szoboszlai described the occasion as one of the most significant moments of his career.
“This may be one of the biggest days of my life. There are a few even more important ones – probably the day I first signed for Liverpool, and of course the day my child was born. But as far as my football career is concerned, today ranks among the three most important.”
Liverpool keen to secure their key player
The club’s decision to tie Szoboszlai down to a long-term contract comes after a period of significant change at Anfield. Liverpool have seen several high-profile departures in recent years, including Trent Alexander-Arnold in 2025 and Ibrahima Konaté in 2026 after both left following the expiry of their contracts. Meanwhile, long-serving forward Mohamed Salah reportedly requested to terminate his contract.
Against that backdrop, retaining Szoboszlai became a major priority for the club as they look to build their next generation around one of their standout performers. Reports in the British press also suggest the Hungarian midfielder could be handed the role of vice-captain, further underlining his growing influence within the dressing room.
Agent: Szoboszlai has earned his place among football’s elite
Szoboszlai’s agent, Mátyás Esterházy, said the new contract reflects the midfielder’s outstanding development since arriving in England.
“With this contract, Dominik has reached the level that he fully deserves after his incredible performances over the past three seasons. The fact that Liverpool were so determined to keep him clearly confirms that Dominik is no longer simply passing through football’s elite – he is an established and defining member of that exclusive group.”
From Salzburg to the Premier League summit
Szoboszlai’s senior career began in Austria with Red Bull Salzburg, where he also featured for feeder club FC Liefering before moving to RB Leipzig in Germany. Liverpool paid around EUR 70 million to bring him to Anfield in 2023, making him the most expensive Hungarian footballer in history. Since arriving on Merseyside, he has won the Premier League and the EFL Cup, although the 2025–26 campaign marked the first trophyless season of his senior career.
Liverpool will begin the new season under a new manager following the departure of Arne Slot, with Spanish coach Andoni Iraola taking charge. With his long-term future now secured, Szoboszlai is expected to remain a central figure in the club’s plans as they enter a new era.
