Will 20 August fireworks be washed away by the rain?

As Pénzcenztrum writes, the fate of the spectacular fireworks display scheduled for Tuesday, 20 August, remains uncertain due to weather concerns. The forecast predicts a mix of sunshine and cloud cover, but there is a significant risk of showers and thunderstorms, particularly in the northwest regions of Hungary. According to HungaroMet Plc., a slow-moving cold front will dominate the weather over the next 36 hours, increasing the likelihood of thunderstorms, especially in the afternoon and evening.

The weather on 20 August

On Monday evening, clouds are expected to build up first in the Transdanubian region and then in the north, bringing showers and thunderstorms that may persist until midnight.

Tuesday’s weather will continue to be unstable, with repeated waves of showers and thunderstorms, particularly in the northwestern and central parts of the country. These storms could bring downpours, hail, and gusty winds, with some areas potentially seeing over 50 mm of rainfall, leading to flash floods.

A first-level thunderstorm warning has been issued for the northern and north-western regions, including Pest County, casting doubt on the planned fireworks event. State Secretary Zoltán Kovács says:

The tragic outcome of the 20 August 2006 event was the result of irresponsibility on the part of the organisers and decision-makers at the time. This will not happen now, as the operational team has all the information at its disposal and is made up of decision-makers who can intervene at any venue and, if necessary, stop the event – including the fireworks display on Tuesday night.
