Ferencváros wins the away derby for the first time since 2000

Hungarian Football League

The greens won the match by exploiting Újpest’s errors in defence, Daily News Hungary reports.

First half

Újpest started the derby with great enthusiasm and scored the first goal in the 4th minute after a corner. It took several minutes after the goal for Fradi to get back into the game, however, the away side was not able to break Újpest’s defence. They mostly kept the ball in their own half, the defenders passed it to each other, although sometimes they tried to reach Böde with long balls, without success. In contrary, Újppest tried to counterattack quickly, but the last passes never were good enough.

In the 23rd minute, however, Jenner shot a freekick to goal from about 40 meters. Dmitrovic was able to save it to corner, but the following set-piece resulted in an equalizing goal. The ball touched two heads until it reached Gyömbér, who finally headed it towards goal. Dmitrovic saved again, but the ball popped Gyömbér again, who finished it finally.

Second half

The game after the goal became rough. Strong and sometimes violent tackles were committed by both sides. Nothing changed for the second half. The greens still tried to play long balls, still without success. The only threat was caused by Leonardo who proved to be a difficult to contain for home defenders. On the other side, Újpes was still unable to play precisely in the box.

The game seemed to end without any further goal, however, after an UTE corner Ferencváros lead a quick counterattack. The home players were still in the opposite half, the lone defender János Nagy slipped so Leonardo could run and score a goal without any difficulty.

The Brazilian’s goal turned out to be decisive, eventually. Ferencváros was able to beat its greatest rival in away after 14 years. With this win, they also moved up to the 5th position on the table, while Újpest remained 9th for the time being.
