Hungarian university students will once again be able to apply for Erasmus programmes from the 2026/27 academic year, while Hungarian researchers and universities will regain access to Horizon Europe opportunities, the Minister of Foreign Affairs announced on Facebook on Wednesday.

Hungarian students now can apply for Erasmus+ again

In her post, Anita Orbán recalled that on Tuesday the Council of the European Union had adopted the European Commission’s proposal, bringing the rule-of-law conditionality procedure to a close and restoring full access to the Erasmus+ and Horizon Europe programmes for Hungarian students and researchers.

“When we reached an agreement in May on the path towards securing the return of EU funding, it was particularly important to me that Hungarian young people and researchers should no longer have to bear the consequences of previous disputes,” the minister said.

The European Commission decided

At the end of September, the European Commission announced that, in its assessment, the reforms introduced by Hungary’s new government had delivered results: “Hungary has taken important steps to strengthen the rule of law and protect the EU’s financial interests.”

At the time, the Commission recommended that the Council of the European Union enable the release of EUR 4.2 billion in cohesion funding for Hungary and restore access to the Erasmus+ and Horizon Europe programmes for Hungarian students and researchers.
