Four paramedics in southern Hungary have been charged with repeatedly assaulting an intoxicated patient inside a hospital detoxification unit, allegedly beating him until he lost consciousness three times.
According to the Baranya County Prosecutor’s Office, the incident took place in November 2025 at the Emergency Clinic of the University of Pécs Clinical Centre. Prosecutors have requested suspended prison sentences and a ban preventing all four defendants from working in healthcare, the Hungarian News Agency (MTI) reported.
Patient allegedly assaulted after trying to leave detox unit
According to the indictment, the man had been taken to the emergency department after suffering a head injury in the street. Because he was intoxicated, he was placed in a detoxification room.
Prosecutors say the patient did not want to remain there. He reportedly shouted and repeatedly punched the door while attempting to leave.
The indictment alleges that the four healthcare workers, who were employed as paramedics and registered nurses, entered the room on several occasions and assaulted the man, sometimes together and sometimes individually.
Allegations include punches, kicks and spitting
According to prosecutors, the patient was punched and slapped in the head and face, kicked in the head and legs, had his coat pulled over his head, and was spat on by one of the defendants.
The prosecution alleges that the assaults caused the man to lose consciousness on three separate occasions.
The charges relate to repeated assault committed in a group by persons performing a public duty, along with other offences.
Trial to determine criminal responsibility
The case will now be heard by the Pécs District Court, where the defendants will have the opportunity to respond to the allegations.
The prosecutor’s office is seeking suspended custodial sentences rather than immediate imprisonment, while also requesting that the four defendants be prohibited from practising healthcare professions if convicted.
The charges have been filed, but no verdict has yet been reached.
