Hungary is in for a changeable start to the week, with cloudier skies, rain and overnight frosts following a mostly sunny Sunday. Temperatures will generally reach 5–13°C during the afternoons, but freezing conditions are expected in some areas overnight, while light freezing rain cannot be ruled out locally in the Northern Hungarian Mountains.

According to the latest forecast from HungaroMet, Sunday will remain mostly sunny and dry across much of the country, although cloudier areas may develop in western Hungary. Afternoon temperatures will reach 8–13°C, while the mercury could drop below freezing in some northern and north-eastern areas overnight.

Freezing rain possible in the Northern Hungarian Mountains

Clouds will increase from the south-west during Sunday evening, bringing isolated light rain or showers to parts of southern and central Hungary overnight. HungaroMet also says that light freezing rain is possible in the northern foothills of the Mátra and Bükk mountains during the early hours of Monday.

Fog may form in places, particularly in western Transdanubia, and could make driving more difficult. However, the meteorological service says the overall likelihood of weather events reaching its hazardous-weather warning criteria remains low.

What to expect on Monday and Tuesday

On Monday, western Hungary will mostly enjoy sunny weather. East of the Danube, clouds will gradually break up, although some areas may remain overcast, with a little precipitation possible in the morning.

Afternoon highs will generally range between 7 and 12°C, while temperatures in persistently cloudy areas may remain as low as 5–7°C.

Tuesday will bring another change, as clouds move in from the west. Rain and showers are expected in several parts of the country, mainly from the afternoon onwards, although western Transdanubia may stay mostly dry.

Morning temperatures will range from around -4°C to +4°C, rising to 5–13°C by early afternoon. The mildest weather is expected in the south-west.

Cloudy weather to continue on Wednesday

Wednesday is expected to be mostly cloudy or overcast across much of Hungary, with more sunshine likely only in the north-east and south-west. There may be fewer showers during the day, but isolated showers could develop again later in the evening.

Afternoon temperatures are forecast to reach 5–15°C, with cooler conditions in the north and slightly milder weather in the south and south-west.

With overnight frost, local fog and a chance of freezing rain in some areas, drivers should pay particular attention to changing road conditions early in the week.
