Germany “number one” partner for Hungary, says Szijjarto
Budapest, October 9 (MTI) – Germany is Hungary’s “number one” political, economic, and strategic partner, with German investments having a crucial role in Hungary’s economic output, Peter Szijjarto said on Friday.
The Hungarian foreign minister spoke at the opening of a conference organised by the German Economic Club (DWC) in Budapest.
Szijjarto spoke highly of German investors’ “unbroken” confidence in Hungary and said that Hungary could hardly stay on a long-term growth path without continued development in bilateral economic cooperation.
During the past five years German companies have invested 5.3 billion euros in Hungary, creating nearly 20,600 jobs. Hungary is home to some 6,000 German ventures that employ nearly 300,000 people, Szijjarto said.
On another subject, Szijjarto said that Europe must regain control over its borders and urged a joint effort to secure the borders of Greece. The EU should grant instant financial aid to Turkey, Jordan, Lebanon and Iraq’s Kurdistan region to prevent that a wave of immigrants reach Europe in the million range, Szijjarto said.
Mass migration is a global problem, which calls for a global solution, Szijjarto insisted, and noted that “it wasn’t Europe playing the main role in international political decisions that led to a destabilisation of the Middle East and north Africa”. He insisted that restoring stability in those regions requires a “pragmatic cooperation” between the transatlantic community and Russia. “Un-coordinated movements” will be the result without Europe being able to cooperate with Russia, and this could lead to an “even bigger chaos”, Szijjarto added.
