Hungarian drug trafficker arrested in Mexico

Change language:

Mexican authorities have arrested a Hungarian national wanted across Europe for drug trafficking, taking another step forward in the country’s ongoing crackdown on organised crime.

The suspect, 48-year-old János Balla, had been living under the alias “Dániel Takács” before being detained in the tourist region of Quintana Roo. According to officials, Balla had been sentenced to six years in prison in Hungary for smuggling narcotics and psychotropic substances but disappeared before beginning his sentence. He subsequently became the subject of both a European arrest warrant and an Interpol red notice.

International cooperation to catch Hungarian drug trafficker

Mexico’s Security Minister, Omar García Harfuch, confirmed that the drug trafficker’s arrest followed close cooperation with Hungarian authorities. Intelligence-sharing efforts enabled investigators to locate Balla in the municipality of Benito Juárez, where he was apprehended during a coordinated operation on Politécnico Avenue.

Authorities emphasised that the joint effort between Mexican and Hungarian agencies was key to identifying his movements and securing his arrest. Following his detention, Balla was handed over to Mexico’s National Institute of Migration to assess his legal status and initiate deportation proceedings back to Europe, as reported by Al-Jazeera.

A new anti-crime strategy in Mexico

The arrest comes as Mexico intensifies its fight against organised crime under President Claudia Sheinbaum. Her administration has adopted a tougher stance compared to previous policies, aiming to increase arrests and disrupt cartel-related activities. Recent operations have targeted high-ranking cartel figures, signalling a shift towards more aggressive enforcement. The government has pointed to a growing number of arrests as evidence that its strategy is yielding results.

Outside pressure on Mexico to hunt down fugitives

Mexico’s actions stem from the increasing international pressure mostly coming from the United States, to combat drug trafficking networks. Cooperation between countries has expanded in recent years, including intelligence exchanges and coordinated law enforcement efforts, which included Balla’s capture, who attempted to evade justice abroad.
