Hungarian Easter in 2025 – photo gallery

As a Christian country, Easter is one of the most important holidays in Hungary, with a number of folk customs in addition to its ecclesiastical aspects. These include egg painting and water sprinkling. Thankfully, the weather was nice throughout the weekend. Let us present this year’s Easter in a photo gallery.

Egg painting

Easter egg painting has been a centuries-old tradition in Hungary, not only as a decoration but also as a symbol: the red egg, for example, symbolises the blood of Christ and his resurrection. In the past, eggs were coloured with natural materials such as onion skins, beetroot or walnut stew and often decorated with wax techniques. An indispensable “payment” for Easter watering is the coloured eggs given to the waterers by the girls.

The Easter Sunday food blessing

Traditionally, Catholic believers ask for blessings on Easter ham, scones, eggs and wine. This is mainly a Transylvanian custom in the predominantly Hungarian Szeklerland, for example in Csíkszereda or Sepsiszentgyörgy, but it can also be found elsewhere.

Ábel Szocska, the Bishop of the Diocese of Nyíregyháza, at the consecration of the Passover in the garden of the St. Nicholas Greek Catholic Cathedral in Nyíregyháza on Easter Sunday:

On Easter Monday, participants ride through the streets of the village on a wooden carriage on wheels decorated with pine branches and Hungarian and Szekler flags.
