The 2015 European Short Course Swimming Championships took place in Netanya, Israel, from 2–6 December 2015. The Hungarian team made it to the first place of the medal table with their 11 gold, 3 silver and 1 bronze medals.
This is the first time that Hungary became the first on the medal table in the history of Short Course Swimming Championships. It has happened once before, on long course, in 2012, Debrecen but this is the first time that the country won this much gold medals. The 11-3-1 combination is the best performance ever in Hungarian swimming history!
The best female performer award went to Katinka Hosszú who won 6 gold medals and 1 silver, breaking two world records and six championship records. She started with a world record on the first day in the heats of 400 m individual medley. This was followed by another world record on Friday in the final of 100 m individual medley. She still seems unstoppable: many times the question of her victory not even comes up, but it is more about whether or not she will break another world record (which is many times her own).
László Cseh won 3 gold medals and broke 2 European records (200 m individual medley, 200 m butterfly). He won the gold medal in 100 m butterfly on his 30th birthday. “Winning a gold medal on my birthday at the European Championships – I couldn’t ask for more.” told Laci the Hungarian Swimming Federation. He is now the proud owner of 31 gold medals from European championships altogether!
The other two gold medals were won by Péter Bernek and Dávid Verrasztó. Péter Bernek won a gold medal in 400 m freestyle after a tough battle, while Dávid Verrasztó triumphed in 400 m individual medley.
The silver medals: Katinka Hosszú in 400 m freestyle, Boglárka Kapás in 800 m freestyle and Dániel Gyurta in 200 m breaststroke.
The bronze medal: Boglárka Kapás in 400 m freestyle.
