Hungarian Foreign Minister Anita Orbán has strongly condemned Russia’s latest large-scale assault on Kyiv, calling the overnight strikes a “horrifying reminder” of the human cost of the war in Ukraine.
In a post shared on X on Sunday morning, Orbán reacted to the massive Russian missile and drone attack that targeted Kyiv and surrounding regions overnight. According to Ukrainian authorities, residential buildings, civilian infrastructure and even a school were damaged during the assault, while, according to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, at least 4 people were killed and around 100 others were injured.
“Russia’s brutal overnight attack on Kyiv is another horrifying reminder of the human cost of this war,” Orbán wrote. “Civilians should never wake up to missiles, drones, explosions, and fear for their lives.”

She added that destroyed homes, torn-apart families and the deaths and injuries of innocent civilians were “unacceptable”, concluding that Hungary “strongly condemns the attack and stands by the victims and the people of Ukraine.”
Hundreds of drones and dozens of missiles were launched against Kyiv
The attack reportedly involved hundreds of drones and dozens of missiles striking Kyiv and nearby regions in one of the largest overnight assaults in recent months. Explosions were reported across several districts of the Ukrainian capital, while fires broke out in multiple locations after debris and direct hits damaged civilian infrastructure.

According to Ukrainian officials, around 40 buildings suffered damage, including residential apartment blocks and at least one educational institution. Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry building was also reportedly hit, marking the first time since the Second World War that the ministry’s headquarters sustained damage.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko urged residents to remain in shelters during the attacks as air defence systems attempted to intercept incoming projectiles.

Zelensky warns of hypersonic missile strike
Just hours before the attack, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warned that Russia was preparing a major strike involving the “Oreshnik” intermediate-range hypersonic missile system.
Following the assault, Zelensky confirmed that Russian forces had indeed used an Oreshnik missile against the Kyiv region. Russian President Vladimir Putin first announced the deployment of the Oreshnik system in November 2024, when it was reportedly used against a missile-production facility in Dnipro. The missile was later used again in January this year.
