Hungary supports Kosovo’s European integration and its efforts towards inclusion in international organisations, the justice minister said after his talks with the prime minister of Kosovo in Pristina on Saturday.

Hungary also supports Kosovo’s efforts towards a visa-free status, László Trócsányi told MTI by phone after meeting Ramush Haradinaj.

Haradinaj expressed his gratitude for Hungary’s substantial contribution of 400 troops to the KFOR international peace-keeping mission, Trócsányi said. He said the Kosovan premiere noted that Hungary has the third largest unit serving in KFOR’s 4,000 strong force.

Concerning other topics discussed, Haradinaj indicated interest in intensifying bilateral economic cooperation primarily in water management with a focus on drinking water technology, Trócsányi said.

He said he also met his Kosovan colleague Abelard Tahiri to discuss justice cooperation within the framework of which they agreed on the exchange of experts between the two ministries. Trócsányi said he expressed the Hungarian government’s appreciation of efforts Pristina had taken to strengthen the rule of law and to combat organised crime. At their meeting the two ministers signed a pact on the extradition and transfer of convicts.

Trócsányi also met Interior Minister Flamur Sefaj to discuss cooperation in law enforcement.

Summing up his meetings, he said he told all of his partners that Hungary regards both Kosovo and Serbia as a strategic partner.

Trócsányi in addition noted that his partners indicated their full understanding of Hungary’s migration policy.

They also appreciated the possibility for 49 Kosovan students to study in Hungary under Budapest’s Stipendium Hungaricum scheme.

Trócsányi concluded his visit by giving a lecture at the University of Pristina.
