In a heartfelt gesture reflecting the close cultural ties between India and Hungary, youngest Indian diplomat Dr. Mukesh Kumar Srivastava concluded his tenure as Director of the Amrita Sher-Gil Cultural Centre (ASCC), Embassy of India in Budapest, by sharing a farewell video message in the Hungarian language.
The video, accompanied by a Hungarian-language social media post, received an overwhelming response from Hungarians, members of the Indian community, artists, academics, journalists, and cultural personalities. Many praised the gesture as a reflection of Mukesh’s sincere respect for Hungary and his efforts to build meaningful relationships beyond the traditional framework of diplomacy.
In his farewell message, Mukesh expressed gratitude to the Government and people of Hungary, the Indian community, cultural and academic partners, media, and friends for their support in strengthening the longstanding cultural ties between the two countries.
Reflecting on his tenure, he described Hungary as a country that would always hold a special place in his heart, saying that his three-year in Budapest had left him with unforgettable memories, lasting friendships, and invaluable experiences.
During his tenure, the Amrita Sher-Gil Cultural Centre significantly expanded its activities, organising and supporting a wide range of cultural, literary, educational, yoga, Ayurveda, music, dance, and artistic programmes that strengthened people-to-people connections between India and Hungary. Under his leadership, the Centre organised, on average, more than 100 programmes annually.
Among the major initiatives introduced during his tenure was the “India Knowledge Series”, which brought together Hungarian experts from diverse fields to promote a deeper understanding of India. He also significantly expanded yoga activities across Hungary, with the Centre organising more than 100 yoga events this year—the highest number in its history. Another key initiative was strengthening partnerships with schools, colleges, and universities across Hungary through lectures, cultural presentations, workshops, and academic outreach programmes, further enhancing educational cooperation and people-to-people exchanges between the two countries.
Mukesh became widely known for his humility, accessibility, and genuine personal engagement. His commitment to learning the Hungarian language was particularly appreciated and was widely seen as a sign of his respect for Hungarian culture and his desire to connect more deeply with local communities. He regularly incorporated Hungarian into his public speeches, a gesture that many viewed as both meaningful and uncommon for a foreign diplomat.
His farewell message prompted an outpouring of appreciation from across Hungary. Many described him as an inspiring and compassionate leader who encouraged artists, supported young talent, and promoted Indian culture with warmth, professionalism, and sincerity. Others praised his openness, kindness, and ability to build lasting friendships that extended well beyond official diplomatic responsibilities.

In a comment on the farewell post, Amar Kumar Sinha, a senior member of the Indian community who has lived in Hungary for more than five decades, described Mukesh’s tenure as unprecedented. He noted that the Amrita Sher-Gil Cultural Centre organised, on average, more than 100 cultural programmes annually under his leadership, attributing this achievement to his dedication, enthusiasm, and unwavering commitment to promoting Indian culture.
Many farewell messages on social media also highlighted that Mukesh’s leadership had created numerous opportunities for cultural exchange, education, yoga, music, dance, and artistic collaboration, while strengthening mutual understanding between the people of India and Hungary.
