Hungary’s current sunny and unusually warm autumn weather is about to change, with a frontal system bringing rain, showers and significantly cooler temperatures from Thursday.
Rain and thunderstorms could arrive from Thursday
According to Időkép, the high-pressure system currently keeping the weather dry and sunny is gradually weakening, while a trough is deepening over Western Europe. A wave of fronts is expected to reach Hungary from the west on Thursday and move away by Friday afternoon.
The system could bring rain and showers to many parts of the country, with thunderstorms also possible in some areas. The exact amount and distribution of rainfall remain uncertain, but some regions could receive more than 10 millimetres of rain.
In areas affected by heavier showers or thunderstorms, as much as 20–30 millimetres could fall locally.

Temperatures could drop by several degrees
The biggest change, however, will come after the front passes. Strengthening north-westerly winds will bring considerably colder air into the Carpathian Basin.
After days of temperatures hovering around 25°C, weekend highs are expected to fall to between 15 and 22°C, meaning temperatures may remain below 20°C in many parts of Hungary.
The cloudier and windier conditions could meanwhile keep nights milder, temporarily pushing an end to the near-freezing overnight temperatures seen recently. The large difference between daytime and nighttime temperatures is also expected to become less pronounced.

Wednesday could be the last chance for sunshine
Those hoping to make the most of the current calm and sunny autumn weather may want to do so soon. According to the forecast, Wednesday could be the last particularly good opportunity before the rain and cooler conditions arrive.
