Ádám Matolcsy wanted over suspected economic fraud
An arrest warrant has been issued for Ádám Matolcsy, son of former National Bank of Hungary (MNB) governor György Matolcsy, according to the Hungarian police website. The warrant was issued on Wednesday afternoon by the Central Investigative Prosecutor’s Office in connection with suspected economic fraud.
Authorities are also seeking György Stofa, with reports indicating that international arrest warrants have been issued for both men. Their names appeared on the police website shortly after prosecutors announced developments in the ongoing investigation involving the central bank and its foundations.

The move comes on the same day that prosecutors detained György Matolcsy and questioned him as a suspect in a case involving the management of assets linked to the central bank’s foundations.
Prosecutors allege that a securities-lending agreement signed in February 2025 was used in an attempt to transfer control over the PADME Foundation’s assets to people who would remain under Matolcsy’s influence after he left office. According to the prosecution, the alleged arrangement was intended to enable the former governor and his son to make investments for their own benefit.
The alleged transaction involved Optima and the Central European III Private Equity Fund, represented by Quartz Befektetési Alapkezelő Zrt. Prosecutors say the agreement transferred ownership control over an asset manager overseeing assets with a market value of nearly HUF 200 billion (approximately EUR 547 million). The precise financial damage has not yet been established.
Prosecutors seek Matolcsy’s pre-trial detention
György Matolcsy was questioned for several hours on Wednesday but did not make a statement about the allegations, according to his lawyer, Pál Bátki. He was transferred to a police detention facility after the interrogation.
The Central Investigative Prosecutor’s Office has requested his pre-trial detention, with a judge expected to decide whether to order it. Prosecutors have also detained two other people in connection with the case, while seeking international arrest warrants for two further individuals.
