Hungary’s strengthening currency may become an unexpected challenge for domestic tourism this summer, with many travellers now reconsidering whether a holiday at Lake Balaton is still worth the cost compared to trips abroad.

Can a strong forint make people reconsider their choices?

Financial markets reacted positively to the incoming Hungarian government even before it officially took office. Bond yields fell sharply and the forint strengthened significantly against the euro, reaching around HUF 355–360 per euro — a level not seen in four years. Economists say growing confidence in the new administration and its more technocratic image may be behind the rally.

While a stronger forint is generally welcomed by consumers, it could create difficulties for Hungary’s tourism sector, especially around Balaton, often called the “Hungarian Sea”. Foreign holidays have suddenly become noticeably cheaper for Hungarian families, effectively offering what analysts describe as a 10% discount on spending abroad.

According to Telex’s G7, destinations such as Croatia, Italy or neighbouring Austria are becoming increasingly attractive alternatives to domestic holidays.

Rising prices around the lake

At the same time, many visitors continue to complain about rising prices at Balaton. Despite official inflation data showing relatively moderate increases, regular holidaymakers say food, beach services and small shop prices around the lake have often risen by double digits again this year.

Some returning visitors report that even short holidays at the lake now cost surprisingly large amounts, despite already owning accommodation in the area. Business owners have also noticed changing habits among tourists, with more families bringing their own food and drinks to beaches in order to reduce spending.

Several local entrepreneurs reportedly described last year’s season as only average, with some claiming their profits were roughly half of what they achieved a year earlier. Official tourism figures also showed weaker guest spending around the lake.

Tourism experts remain cautiously optimistic

Not everyone believes Balaton is heading for a difficult summer. According to Balatoni Turizmus Szövetség (Balaton Tourism Association) president Tamás Fekete, businesses offering good quality and reasonable prices still performed well during previous seasons.

He argued that visitors remain highly price-sensitive, forcing service providers to compete across a broad price range. Fekete also rejected claims that prices had increased excessively compared to inflation. Even so, analysts believe the combination of more expensive domestic holidays and cheaper foreign travel may test Balaton’s popularity this summer more than ever before.
