Mayor Karácsony: Budapest must get its money back from govt

Budapest must get its money back from the government, Gergely Karácsony, the city’s mayor, said on Facebook on Tuesday, calling for “an end to anti-Budapest policy”.
As we wrote a few days ago, Mayor Karácsony said, the State Treasury withdrew billions from Budapest, paying wages is problematic for bus, metro, tram drivers
Karácsony said the capital’s Liquidity Working Group held a meeting on Monday to review and prioritise the metropolitan council’s bills. He said he has informed the employees at transport company BKV and retirement homes of the situation regarding the city’s finances, adding that he would be meeting workers at Budapest-run companies throughout the week. The mayor noted that he has also initiated consultations with the city assembly groups so that they can “decide whether they want to be a part of the problem or the solution”.
“So far, all that’s happened is that [ruling] Fidesz is continuing to serve the [central] government instead of Budapest,”
Karácsony said. He said Dávid Vitézy, the leader of the Podmaniczky Movement, wanted to quadruple the price of student public transport passes, even though the public transport deal with the central government generated revenue for the capital. “And the Tisza group doesn’t want to be part of the consultations. No comment!” he added.
Karácsony noted that Budapest will pause public transport services on Friday “as a first warning” and that the unions representing “the employees of the Budapest family” have confirmed that they will be setting up strike committees. Details HERE: Public transport in Budapest to pause on Friday
